Version 5.0

Conversion went very well. It took about 12 hours total. We converted from
3.0 to 4.0 to 5.0.
Now it is just a matter of finding things.

Make sure that if you are converting you absolutely need to add the current
patch. If you don't there will be many problems, specifically with data
colleciton for Job entry and with purchasing for approvals.

Thank goodness for support. I was on the phone probably 5 times yesterday,
but they were very helpful.

So far the only major problem seems to be in data collection. The employees
cannot determine the exact time they clocked in. We can only see a portion
of the clock in time. The screen needs to be readjusted. You can only read
the hour and a little bit of the minute portion.

But so far so good.

Hello Everyone and Happy New Year,
I would like to get an idea when some of you plan to install 5.0. I know
Epicor is going to have a few weekends of support and was wondering if most
were going to wait til then. If anyone is already on 5.0, could you let the
rest of us know how it went and maybe any "Bewares"?

Thanks,

I will probably wait until there is weekend support and until I hear more
feedback from others on the onelist. After the feedback from 4.0 around
this time last year, I'm scared to be one of the first for an upgrade,
although I am very anxious for some of the features of 5.0. So, if anybody
is ambitious enough to go first, please let the wimps out here know how it
went.

I've done some searching on the net with no luck. I'm looking for a ball
park cost of an entry level raid in the 40GB range. Can anyone throw out an
approximate cost of such an animal. Thanks

Shriley,
I would think this would depend on what type of server you have,
whether the array will be internal storage, or external, what Raid
level you want to run, etc. Here's an example,

Raid Controller - Multi channel, on board memory $1500
18.2 GB Hard Drive (3 for Raid 5 Array ) $ 500 ea

So an internal Raid 5 array, with 36.4 GB or usable space could be about 3K,
and again, more or less, depending on factors I listed above
Hope this helps, and if you have any questions, let me know.

This was mainly to support Vantage, I'm going to try and sell our management
on going to Version 5.00 So a small RAID1 is what I had in mind. I wasnt
planning on interviewing vendors for it because I know our Management won't
approve any expenditure for the network beyond subsistance level. (as a
matter of fact, they are questioning whether they even need an IT person at
all, meaning me) I did want to give them factual info.

Shirley,

For an internal RAID array on the cheap side take a look at Adaptec AAA-131
controllers - about $ 500 ... cheapest RAID controller I've found that I was
willing to use.

If you are looking for cheap storage on you LAN I'd suggest you take a
serious look at SNAP servers. Very inexpensive and stand alone boxes. I've
been looking at these for the last few months but have not purchased one
yet. Check out Quantum Snap Server Model 4000 120GB - 4 30-gig drives
w/RAID Support - so 2 drives mirrored for 60 gig total or 4 drives in RAID-5
for 90 GIG total --- at www.CDW.com for $ 2,699. I believe you have to get
the Model 4000 boxes if you want RAID support. For backup I believe they
suggest products like Arcserv since these boxes do not have internal tape
drives.

In either case these are not high performance solutions. Just cheap ones ..

Here is something that I did a couple of years ago. Create a new email address with one of the free email services and then register/post a question to the onelist about wanting another job. Don't give out your name in the email. I had 33 responses from all over the US. This is if you would like to stay in the Vantage fray.

Shirley, I think it shameful when we (the IT people) do our jobs so well;
things run so smoothly; no obvious problems for management; without the full
support of said management; put in the extra time it always take to issure
as humanly possible 100% uptime; the rewards for all this aggrevation is --
Gee, maybe we don't need an IT person after all! What kind of short-sighted
company are you working for? I sincerely hope you can find yourself a
better situation that will utilize your talents and reward your efforts
accordingly. I have been there - done that; you have my best regards.

Thanks for everyone's support, I have been quietly looking. Hopefully, an
oportunity will occur soon with someone in my area, hopefully with Vantage,
I truly like the software. Irregardless, I'm here now and they are entitled

Shirley,

I could be missing another part of the story. But if you want this extra
space just for vantage alone why not go buy a 10 GB drive (or 20GB now for
$99) and run vantage on that drive? I have Vantage loaded on a server on
its own drive and have 'training' (vantage again with 2-3 day old data) on
another machine (again on its own drive). Using the WinAt command I copy
the db over to its new location. I was assuming you wanted a RAID for
recovery purposes, so using the WinAt command and some sort of tape backup
system I think this should be plenty for a company who doesnt value your
time much.

:), Im already configured that way now. And I dont expect that that will
change, I reviewed Epicor's recomended hardware configuration it recomended
a RAID1. I haven't really had the resources to keep the network as tuned as
I'd like. So I am expecting a performance drop in Vantage when I go to 5.00
(I'm on 3.00 now, we'll skip over 4.00) I just want to be sure that
management is aware of both the Benefits and consequences of the change and
what it will cost for optimum performance.

Shirley-

Heard an interesting statistic from another IS person a couple of years ago:
In manufacturing, the IS budget (including salary and benefits, plus
hardware/software support, replacement, repair) should equal 2.5% of the
gross yearly sales of the company. That's depressing, huh? But remember,
you are in one of the fastest-growing professions in the world, and the
demand is always higher than supply, and will be for about 5-8 more years
from everything I've read. Best of luck to you.

Not using RAID is a bad idea unless your users don't mind about a day
or two worth of downtime. If the hard drive crashes, Vantage is down
until you can get another drive in the server and restore the whole
server from backup, which will usually take hours due to the snail-
paced restore speed of most tape drives. If you want mega-budget,
use NT's built in RAID services under disk administrator, then you're
just out the price of whatever size hard drives you use. Most people
prefer RAID controller cards independent of the OS but its free and
it works.

Actually, I much prefer to, "DO IT RIGHT", but that path has been blocked
by the infinate wisdom of management's perception..."Its never happened
before, why worry about it." The best you can do sometimes is make sure
consequences are documented BEFORE the inevitable crash occurs.
