What kind of Document Types have you used?

So I talked to Epicor about this today, and here's what I found:

Default Base URL (under Company Configuration -> System -> Attachments)
This is used if you check the box on the same screen labeled "Allow Default Document", and you select the method "File System Document" and check the box labeled "Enable File System". Then if you attach a file without specifying a document type, the file will go here.

Base URL (under Document Type Maintenance)
Is only enabled if you choose the Storage Type "File System Document", but it doesn't assemble the path using the Default Base URL. It needs to be a full path. This can be the same path, or a different path, or a path on a different server even.

So...how do we submit a request so that we can change an actual base path for the attachments, without having to go through and rewrite the whole table? This still seem like a fundamental flaw...

Yeah, they populate the 'document type' drop down when you're adding
attachments to records. Anyone using document management should have at
least a few in there.

We use them for reporting on what docs are out there, and it's a quick way
to link to specific folders for saving.

We're using them, but it's still clunky overall.

In Company Configuration (System -> Attachments) there's an option for a default base URL, but it doesn't seem to have any effect on anything.

There's also a Base URL setting in Document Type Maintnance, and I'd like to be able to use that to allow me to move the storage location of the attachment, but as far as I can tell, it still embeds the whole path in the attachment record. If anyone knows the right way to do this, I'd love to know how.

Jason,
What version are you on?
Depending on the version, this seems to be done a bit differently.
In 8.03, there wasn't a good way to attach a file and it automatically go to a predetermined location.
In 9 this was 'fixed'
The setting you are referring to in Company Maintenance is only used for Document Types set to 'File System Location.'
To use any attachments you need to setup Document Types in Document Management.
When using 'File System Location' Epicor takes the URL in company Config and saves any files attached to records in that location, however Epicor adds some folder structure depending on the table the associated record has an attachment for. So for instance, if you attach a document in Part Maintenance it will put the file in '[CompanyURL]/Part/[YourFileAsAUniqueID]'
The other options are SharePoint and Collaborative - which are SharePoint things, which I have yet to experiment with.
The other option, 'Attachment Link' seems to be able to work in one of two ways. When selected you can specify a Base URL for the specific Document Type and it looks like Epicor will move your files to THAT location.
If you do NOT specify the Base URL, I think it just creates a link to wherever you selected the file from, it doesn't move it anywhere. Usually this is NOT desired since the document could be on someones desktop and when the PC is powered off or due to security settings, the file is not accessible by others via Epicor.

As with anything, each version has their own bugs AND it seems to me that each version I've messed with this, there are slight variations in how this works. I suggest getting into a test environment and try setting a few document types different ways and attach some files and check and see what happens with different settings.
