Win 95 client running slow

Wayne,

Which version of Norton Utilities are you using?
I should get the one that I can run from the CD-ROM.

Hello,

I shut down the old server where Vantage 4.0 was running before. All
the clients running Win 95 OS slowed down considerably. I ran
the "UNREGOCX.BAT" on the clients without any good results. It helped
the Win 98 client though. I started the old server where there is a
copy of Vantage and Progress, without running the database. The speed
is up again.
Any ideas?

Mike Tonoyan / All American Products Co.
Mike,

The Vantage client leaves a *lot* of entries in the regestry of the
workstation. Un-installing (or running UNREGOCX.bat) does *not* clean up
those registry entries.

Launch REGEDIT. Search vor 'Vantage'. Manually change *every* entry to
point to your new server (the new mapped drive).

Yea, it's a lot of work. I've had to clean up workstations (both Win95 and
WinNT) that have had Vantage 3, 4, 5.0 & 5.1 on them. Took the better part
of an hour to clean up the registry. The system ran *much* faster then.

Been there, Done that, but it works...

I launched REGEDIT and just deleted "Vantage" and then reinstalled client...

Like the other guys said, you got'ta remove all the registry entries
pointing to the old server.

Rather than the time consuming manual method, you might try the "Win
Doctor" program in Norton Utilities. It cleans up a lot of registry junk,
and should remove the old Vantage pointers. On the version I have, you can
run it directly from the CD without installing it. You'd have to read the
fine print in the license yourself, but that *might* even save you from
buying a copy for every PC.

-Wayne Cox
Instead of searching just for "Vantage entries" you can search only the
value data (uncheck keys and values) for the old path: e.g.. vantage lives
now on X:\Vantage, but it used to be on V:\Vantage, then do a value data
search for v:\vantage.
This shows you only those keys still referring to the old location, and
thus, saves you from wearing out the F3 key on your keyboard. ;)

Paul,

This is partly true. Vantage/Progress puts entries in the registry pointing
to *both* the mapped drive (V:\Vantage) *and* the server name
(\\ServerName\epic51\vantage\<etc>). You'll need to change both.

If, by chance, you run a network with both NetWare and Windows, and use
NetWare's NDS4NT to simplify management (like we do), you'll learn that you
*have* to change the server name callouts to the mapped drive letter
callout, or you'll have other problems.

You'll also want to delete registry entries to 8.3A, 9.0B or 9.1A if those apply to old versions of Progress on a Client -- Assuming 9.1C is your current version.
