8.3 MES and Touchscreens?

We installed the recommended touch screen setup
for our MES but discovered that there was too
much key-entry data to do without keyboards. We
also struggled with the on-screen keyboards but
finally abandoned the touch screens in favor of
mice, keyboards and tethered scanners.

The result was a cheaper & easier to maintain MES data collection station.

We also Thin-apped the startup and scripted
global reboots for when we have to shut down the
Server. Now all of the maintenance can be done
from IT without having to go to each station to verify it loaded up correctly.

The Thinapp also makes rebooting the data
collection stations an easy & centralized task
allowing out IT people to remotely administer the
Vantage system during non-working hours.

Is there a benefit to going with touchscreen LCDs on MES workstations? Or is keyboard entry required?

Thanks
Using touch screens for MES workstations on the shop floor worked great
for us. We customized the MES screens, enlarging the buttons. Some
keyboard entry is still required.

It depends on what you are going to do in MES. We use it just for clocking in and out of jobs and that is it. We purchased an industrial touchscreen LCD (made for really dirty enviroments) and use barcodes for the start production activity. For the end production activity screen I customized it with a keypad to report quantities. Works pretty smoothly with no keyboard or mouse.

We use MES the same way. 6.1 had the onscreen keyboard but in 8 it is missing. Was it difficult to customize a keyboard? A tutorial somewhere maybe?

Based on experience here with 24 of these Pioneer POS touchscreens - put keyboards and mice. The users will thank you. 100% Touch screen is a great idea if you're working a POS in a restaurant or something, its a suck idea if you're trying to pick from drop downs, tap a text box to give it "focus", etc.

We are in the fortunate position where we sell touch screen options with
our Marvel Vertical Tilt Frame saws. I am going to be experimenting
with one after the newly converted MES users get used to barcode
swiping, and mouse entry.

My goal is to get feedback from the shop users to see if the improvement
justifies the expense. Granted these screens are industrial strength so
the cost and quality is a lot higher. If they like what they see I will
opt for a less expensive model for the shop floor.
