Touch screens for Data collection

If you would like one pro, here it is.
We have 7 DC computers. 1 has an add-on screen (around $150). I replaced
the keyboard with a keypad for numbers (that really is much faster with
keys) I had complaints about change the first week, but after that nothing.
Then after about a month or two, I started getting questions on when I was
going to do the others.
Granted we use barcode id badges for punching in and out and selecting
employee. When it comes to numbers, the keypad is fast, but for text, I
find more of the employees can find letters via the screen than the keyboard
(not to many people in the shop are really familiar with QWERTY).
As of now, about a year and a half later, I don't hear much about the
terminal, just see people poking at the screen whenever I go by.
Basically, some prefer it, some don't, but no one in the shop will walk the
extra 50 feet to the "normal" DC computer.

Tony,

We have about 12 data collections screens in the shop, 1 is a touch screen.
I never see anyone use it.

Guy in the shop says that it can be difficult to add numbers and such
because some of the users have fat fingers.

I would not get another one, people are familiar with mouse and keyboard.

Tony,

I agree with Dan. We have several data collection centers. We
purchased 3 touch screens and the remainder we used mouse and keypad.
Nobody uses the touch screens.
We had one go bad and I replaced it with a mouse and keypad NOT ONE
person complained.

We used them initially when starting Vantage. They were nice butÂ…They cost
around $600 for a 15” (when we bought them) and as I watched the people in
the shop, over half the people used the keyboard and mouse. When I asked
why they said they liked the kb better. They have all since failed, took
about a year and half. As they failed I replaced them with cheap-o 15”
versions. Not once complaint asking for them back. We had 10 stations.

Tony,

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here. We are a metal fab shop
and we're currently using touch screens on our 4 data collection
stations. We've got one 3M unit and three EhloSoft units, all 17".
They are capacitive type touchscreens and all are performing very
well. They've been in operation for about 6-8 months. They seem to
be widely used (touch vs. mousing) throughout the factory. We,
however, are not fully implemented on shop floor reporting (only one
station is logging jobs), so the data collection stations are mostly
used for clockin/clockout for all of our 100 employees. Even though
mouse and keyboards are available for use at each station (it's not
one or the other), most data input is via the screen.

An interesting side note, when we set up these data collection
stations, we installed barcode readers and provided the employees
with barcoded badges and all routers are barcoded. I don't believe
anyone uses the readers for any data input. It's all via the screens.

As we progress in our shop floor implementation and we add data
collection stations, I believe we'll purchase more touchscreens and
fewer barcode readers.

Another opinion...

Depends upon the use and more so, who designed the application. We have
several touch screens in our shop environment and they seem to be holding up
very well.

We have approx 20+ touch screens on our grinding machines to program the
dressing of the wheels. Well designed program by the machine manufacture
and very easy to use.

We have 2 touch screens on specialize gauging. Again, well designed program
by the gage manufacture and very easy to use.

We have 2 touch screens running Progress applications that I wrote for
accessing data out of Vantage. Well designed programs and very easy to use.

I have 1 touch screen running at a centralized Vantage data collection
workstation that no one uses the touch screen, they resort back to the mouse
and keyboard because they find it difficult sometimes to accurately hit some
of the objects.

The touch screen technology has come a long way and they are much better now
a days. All the units we use are on the cheaper side (even though touch
screen are not cheap $400+) so they may not be as accurate as a more
expensive one, but it seems that if the application is designed well, you
can't beat a touch screen. Take a look at most stores and restaurants these
days, you see touch screens everywhere. I recently installed a 15" ELO flat
panel on my brothers home theater system and he is running it at 1024x768
with small fonts and can accurately navigate through all windows to control
everything, but then again that monitor set him back $1300+.

So the question you have to ask yourself, is what will it be used for, and
how easy is it to use the planned application/software with a touch screen.
Would I recommend a touch screen in a shop environment - Yes. Would I
recommend a touch screen to be used with Vantage data collection - No.

Just my .02 cents worth.

Mike
