Alavara Tax Connect down?

Yes, I was disappointed that this took so long to figure out. Â We contacted our rep on Friday night, so they knew about the issue since then.

Anyone else having issues connecting to Tax Connect this morning??

Epicor said I was the only call they had on this.

Regards,

We are having issues as well.  Users are getting 'Tax Connect is down' errors.  When I try testing the connection from Company Configuration, I get the following error:

Ping Tax Service - Error found: ; nested exception is:

javax.net.ssl.HandshakeException: sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: PKIX path building failed:  sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find valid certification path to requested target.

I left a voice message for Epicor's Financial module group, I submitted a call online, and I just opened a case with Avalara.

Avalara is aware of the issue - caused by them updating their SSL certificate on avatax.avalara.net over the weekend.  Tech told me that they have a team pulled together and dedicated to working with Epicor to resolve the issue.  I personally think the issue is on the server certificate/SSL setup on avatax.avalara.net (something like this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5758812/the-webserver-i-talk-to-updated-its-ssl-cert-and-now-my-app-cant-talk-to-it)  but I guess Epicor might be able to point them in that direction.

I'll post in here if/when Avalara says things should be working again.
We just got an email from Avalara:

You may be experiencing issues accessing the Avalara AvaTax service. At this time we believe Magento, Syspro, Epicor and some SDK integrations are affected. We are aware of these issues and are working diligently to fix them.

We will provide an update when available.

Do any other Tax Connect users have a workaround for this issue? We are a retail distributor, and cannot wait days for a resolution. Â We are already suffering due to this outage.

I put a a workaround in place - but it is a little involved to explain / understand unless you are familiar with how SSL and certificate chains work.

The root problem seems to be that the JRE that Epicor has for OpenEdge is a pretty old version (1.5 something), and its Certificate Authority store lacks one of the Verisign intermediate certificates in the cert chain of the new SSL cert that Avalara put on avatax.avalara.net.

The fix is to import the VeriSign Class 3 Public Primary Certificate Authority - G3 certificate into Epicor's Java Runtime Environment Certificate Store file.  JRE's cert authority store is a file called "cacerts" and should be in your OpenEdge installation folder.  Here are some of the relevant paths, in our particular installation:

OpenEdge JRE is here:
E:\Epicor\oe102a\jre\

"keytool.exe" - the utility to modify your cacert file, is here:
E:\Epicor\oe102a\jre\bin\keytool.exe

"cacerts" - the JRE certificate store, is here:
E:\Epicor\oe102a\jre\lib\security\cacerts

So, I manually pulled the certificate from avatax.avalara.net - I'll try to attach it to this group as a *.cer file, but for security reasons you should really grab it yourself either from Verisign's website, or from avatax.avalara.net by clicking the little lock icon in your browser - and I put the certificate at:
E:\Epicor905\verisignc3g3_ava.cer

Then I ran this from the command prompt:

E:
cd \Epicor\oe102a\jre\bin
keytool -import -keystore ..\lib\security\cacerts -file E:\Epicor905\verisignc3g3_ava.cer -alias tempverisignc3g3 -storepass changeit -noprompt

And then things started working again - the SSL handshake can now confirm the validity of the SSL cert on avatax.avalara.net.

Hopefully this is enough information to help someone else.

How would you undo this certificate install once Epicor releases a fix?

Thanks,
Bob Beaghan

Couldn’t we just backup the “cacerts” file and restore it once an official fix has been release?

Thanks for this workaround.
When exporting the cert to a file, which version should we select? DER or Base-64?

When exporting the cert to a file, I believe I selected Base-64, but I might be wrong there. Probably both work, since they are X.509

Yes, sorry, I should have mentioned that. You probably want to make a backup of your cacerts file BEFORE you import the new certificate.  If you didn't, you can also use keytool.exe to remove the imported certificate if you wish. It should be something like this (assuming you imported it using the alias I used in my example):

keytool -delete -keystore cacerts -alias tempverisignc3g3 -storepass changeit

For those of you who have not yet done this, I just got the fix from Epicor installed, and it does look like it works.

Go to ftp://ftpmpls.epicor.com/vantage/, login with your Epicweb ID.
Download avalara.zip

Instructions were from Epicor. Â I don't know how specific this is to our version, so buyer beware. Â You should have received details from your support team by now, but if not, this is what I did:

1)      Make a backup copy of the following file: <Epicor9 Root>\Server\Avalara\AddTrustBundle.crt  (Note: make sure that the original .crt file has been removed from the Avalara folder)

2)Â Â Â Â Â Â Make a backup copy of the following file: <Epicor9 Root>\Server\Avalara\Avalara_AddCert.bat

3)Â Â Â Â Â Â Uncompress the files in the attached zip file to the <Epicor9 Root>\server\Avalara folder.

4)Â Â Â Â Â Â Start a CMD prompt on the Epicor9 server: Start > Run > CMD

5)Â Â Â Â Â Â In the CMD prompt, change directories to the <Epicor9 Root>\Server\Avalara folder:

6)      Run the Avalara_AddCert.bat file, loading the new .crt file. Syntax of command will be as follows: (for this command, you must also know the install location of Progress OpenEdge.)

    “Avalara_AddCert.bat <Epicor Root>\server\avalara <OpenEdge Root>”

    (e.g. > Avalara_AddCert.bat C:\epicor\epicor905\server\avalara c:\epicor\oe102a)

a)      b) Alternatively, you may be prompted to “Trust this certificate?” Answer “Y”

i)        Type “Y” to trust this certificate.

ii)       Type “Y” to trust this certificate, again.
