AS2 Blank Title 73628

We haven't actually started using EDI yet but are about two months into
the setup process. We are working with TIE commerce for our mapping
software. (Tie Commerce is a partner with Epicor) TIE bundles Lexicom
with its software and uses it as the communication engine for VAN
communications, AS2, etc.

What Steven is saying about the cost per connection is what we have been
told as well.

We want to transmit our PO requirements to our suppliers in a less expensive way than EDI. One alternative offered by one of our suppliers wass "AS2", which is more of a protocol that an actual solution provider. In doing a search on AS2, I came across 3rd-party suppliers like Lexicon, Globalscape and TrueCommerce that employ it.
Â
Does anyone use or have opinions on these (or other companies like them)?
Â
Thanks,
-Karl-

Hi,

I do not have experience yet with these companies, but did with
NuBridges/iSoft. AS2 allows you to use certificates to send/receive
securely to a static IP server/pc. Depending on the number of trading
partners you have (and those who can use AS2 - not all of them can), you
may want to inquire about pricing for "unlimited" trading
partners...Then it is only a yearly cost for maintenance/upgrades - no
kilocharacter costs. If you do not have many partners that can use AS2,
you can ask what breakouts they offer for licensing...

We hardly ever had any problems with NuBridges/iSoft and if I did, they
were pretty good at support.

AS2 can save you money if you have many trading partners or large
volumes of data to send/receive - as long as both parties can use AS2.

We use Lexicon and it works very well, but you have to purchase a license for the total number of connections. So if you aren't using a VAN and need to make AS2 connections to a lot of different partners, it can get expensive. What I like about AS2 is that it is a push protocol, you don't have to set up a schedule to grab data, it just gets pushed to you (or visa versa) when it is ready.

But like you said, AS2 is just a secure communication protocol. You still have to determine what information you will be trading and in what format. With everyone out there playing by their own data format rules, EDI is still the only universal game in town as far as I know. Don't get me wrong, I hate it and if anyone else has a better replacement for it I'm all ears.
