Backflush, COS/Labor, MRP, PO Suggestions

Oh and if you are planning on doing this with a lot of jobs (and these
jobs have a lot of subassemblies), let's talk off list.

I have a crystal report that will dump the info into excel and then
paste-insert the records in vista. To enter 400 records by hand would
take me about 4-5 hours. To run the report and insert into Vista takes
about 25 minutes.

And since you are on 6.1, I do not remember at all if you could do this.

Again sorry...it's Friday and I want out of here now! :)

I actually go to Labor Entry and do this.
Enter my date (today's date) and the backflush employee id.
Then new detail, enter the job number, subassembly and the last op,
usually only the last op will show up because it is labeled quantity
only.
Enter quantity (which is the required quantity for that subassembly on
that job) and save that record.
Repeat this is for all subassemblies on the job.

So if I have 10 subassemblies on a job, I have 10 records for that job.

This process actually backflushes all labor on that job for all ops.

Hope this is clear...let me know if it isn't. It took me 3 months to
get someone to help me out on this process last year! So I have 3
months of F%^& up jobs and bad GL numbers because of this process. And
actually I think it was Stephanie that helped clear up a lot of issues
we were having!

So test away, buddy!

Ok, here are the steps you should take:

1) Create the job as stated before.
2) Create the labor records
3) Go to job closing and check the boxes.

Now everything should show as completed, ops and materials....

Oh - wait - it isn't greyed-out, it just doesn't light-up until you
select the "Complete" box.

But, even after doing this and closing the job, the operations in
question did not show as "Closed" in Job Tracker. When I closed the
job, it asked if I was sure I wanted to backflush material, but didn't
mention labor at all.

I've read before that backflush can happen automatically - how is this
enabled (or verified that it's enabled)? I see a number of our recent
jobs have backflush-enabled operations complete, but I've never
intentionally run a backflush.

Similarly, in our test environment I changed a number of operations on
a job to backflush, then ran backflush for the company, but the
operations in question did not close (the immediately subsequent
operation is complete). So, how or when does the backflush affect the
status of the operations?

I've also never run the COS/Labor or MRP processes. Will running any
of the three of these affect financials at all? And how can I pare
down the results from the PO Suggestions to leave out (not generate in
the first place) suggestions for jobs that are already closed?

Thanks in advance!

In this particular test case, I believe it's labor.

I'm looking at the operation and it has "0" values for all time values,
though. Could this be related?

We do nothing but backflush, but my question to you is WHAT do you want
to backflush, Labor, Material, or both?

Backflushing material would mean that every stock item in the system
needs to be marked as backflush. And it has to be stock.

Backflushing labor and material, you set all ops to backflush, but the
last op is marked as 'quantity only'. If you have ANY Subcontract ops,
do nothing with these, leave as time and quantity, but mark the last op
as quantity only and as final op. Also make sure that the last op is
NOT a subcontract op. On top of this, ALL material should be related to
an op, preferably the last one, but it still works regardless.

Now for the system to do this correctly, when you go to close a job,
check the backflush box first, hit save, then close or complete.

I don't mess with the backflush labor process...heard horrible stories
about it....others might give you better clues for that process. We
don't have MRP...still works anyway.

Backflushing only labor...cannot tell you since we do both...

BTW - this is all in v6 for the time being.

Sorry, Ari,

You still have to create labor records....this helps backflush the
labor. Hey, this is how you would backflush labor only!

What you are doing is completing the quantity on the last op...and
because of the backflush on all ops but the last, this backflushes all
labor for all ops.

Make sense?

And when you are in Job closing it will only ask about the material.

So, just to be clear:

You use your dummy shop-employee to clock into MES, start work on the
job/op, you then basically immediately end work on the job/op, and then
running the backflush function does what it's supposed to?

Thanks again.

Yeah, basically...we don't have our guys clock in and out of jobs (long
story). So I have a dummy employee called Backflush. I use this to
create labor records manually through the Labor Entry program.

Manasa - what do you mean by "Create the Labor Records?" You mean go in
as a shop employee and clock into and out of the job?
