Ironically making the computers less secure...

Corporate people need to spend two weeks out in the field every year...

I need to find a solution for our DC stations where our corporate
security chief insists that they be password protected after 20 minutes,
and we insist that keyboards be inaccessible to shop employees.

Is there a bar code that when scanned will actuate the Ctrl-Alt-Del
function?

You would have to see if the Bar Code Zymology you are using supports those
key strokes. I took a quick look at Extended 3 of 9 and it did not appear
that it can reproduce those key strokes.

Your security person may not like it but you could perhaps set the PC to not require Ctrl-Alt-Del to get the login screen. In the Local Policy Securoty Policues there is a setting for "Interactive Login: Do Not Require CTRL+ALT+DEL" so, I believe, an Enter or perhaps any key (via bar code) would allow a login. I've never tried this setting to see how it works. The Ctrl-Alt-Del is purposely linked to a keyboard to resist a remote initiation of a login. We secure our DC stations other than via password since all of them use the same password and everyone knows it.

Steve,

What type of terminals are you using in the shop? XP? Terminal Server?

In XP under Control Panel, User Accounts, Advanced tab, Uncheck "Require
users to press CTRL+ALT+DEL".

Even though the user doesn't have to press these keys, they will still
be prompted for a password.

Thanks,

I would suggest talking to your systems administrator and have him
reasign the computers that lock down your DC Computers but allow them
to remain open 24 hours a day for the application. But I lock all
the other workstations after 15 minutes of no activity. The
administrator can do this through Group policy. That is what I have
going on in my network.

Thanks to all for your comments. Since corporate is unwavering in their
domain policy (which over-rides my local policy) I am left with a)
trying to keep the computers from being inactive or b) locking all
keyboard keys except Ctrl-Alt-Del. Any suggestions on these fronts would
be welcome.

Ultimately, the IT department will win in what they want to do. They
are the ones that will set security. If they notice that the
computer is untouched for their allotted time, they will find a way
to get it locked. They want to keep the integrity of the system in
tack, which is understandable. You need to convince them to change
their ways and allow them to only allow Vantage to run on the
machine. Let them hide and remove all icons for any applications.
This will keep the system and the network to be secure and will allow
you to have the system up 24-7.

Good Luck,
