Hi All,
Bar coding - a fun subject...after you start you'll be bar coding
everything :-).
I've used a program from Elring Software - link below. They offer a free
trial, but some of the letters are only displayed half way (you'll
understand when you see it) the pay version is $99 and no I don't make a
dime...but I do recommend this as it is a great product. Basically,
Vantage is setup to recognize 3 of 9 bar codes and with this particular
program you can create your bar code(s) and then print them in Word or
copy them into your Crystal Reports if you would like. Beats the old way
of *code$i* so you can streamline your bar code programming.
If you are wanting to use these in Crystal for travelers you will need
to make sure you copy the fonts to each machine c:\windows\fonts...
As for the TAB and ENTER keys, these are embedded in the bar code itself
and the little bar code generator will put this in there for you - just
make sure you select the Full ASCii character set.
If you have any spaces, pluses or other characters that 3 of 9 bar codes
have problems with, this program has actually has a way to deal with
this and display properly.
Here's the link. If you have any questions let me know either via email
or responding to the group here.

We are on V8.03 and use bar coding.
We use bar codes for the following:
Start Production Activity
Start Setup Activity
Starting Indirect Labor Activity
Entering Scrap Codes
Entering Rework Codes
All the Start Activity bar codes totally automate the process. I.E. the
user enters their employee number to log in and then they scan the bar
code which opens the appropriate screen, enters the data, and closes the
screen.
As far as best practices go:
Use a customization to manage the tab order of controls. This will
minimize the length of your bar code.

Subject: [Vantage] Bar Coding & Data Collection
Is anyone using Vantage 8.0 or 8.03 and doing bar coding and shop floor
data collection that would be willing to give us some tips on best
practices? Also, if there is anyone in the St. Paul, MN area or within
an hour around the cities that would be willing to give us a tour of
their manufacturing facility where they are doing bar coding and shop
floor data collection?
