Data collection synchronize with Vantage

We successfully string numerous fields together in one barcode which
Allows for one scan to enter data into several fields.

Example:
Job + Assembly + Operation
'*' + TRIM(JobAsmbl.JobNum) + '$I' + asmb + '$I' + '20*'

Aaron Hoyt coaches me through the first ones.

Works well for us.
Vantage 6.1

From our experience with bar codes in 6.1 of Vista with the Data
Collection Module to clock in & out of job, assy, operation - had to
scan each step, not just ONE bar code, as wanted to.

you DON'T save ANY steps with the bar code, as you have to scan in
each tab, enter, next function as a Separate Bar Code. We tried
various ways to link together, but based on the screen (input)
design, were unable to get bar coding to do as it was designed to do
by its' nature - actually save steps, where can scan one or two
items, not 3-5 or more.

Were told that there MAY be a way - with CUSTOMIZATION -- Again, why
can't their software do as they say -- in the Industry Standard Way -
and actually bar code = save steps.

This topic has been discussed before yet I am wondering about any
updates...

We are primarily looking at this process for inventory tracking.
We want to use hand-held remote bar code (or RFID) scanners to collect
data
Then synchronize that data with Vantage.

Example:
Scan a warehouse for inventory then enter inventory adjustments
in Vantage

If you are doing this now:
What scanners do you use?
Does your barcode or RF tag have all data plus the tabs & enter
key for data entry?
Do you open a screen in Vantage then use the accumulated data as
input?
Do you run this data through a progress program and directly
change inventory counts?
Etc?

All information is appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Babette,

We are not using it but Epicor has a module for v8 that integrates handheld
computers (with bar code readers or RFID readers) directly into Vantage over
a wireless connection.

Hope that helps,

Becky,
It has been covered on this list for the last several years how to combine
several entries into one barcode. You need to do a little customization of
the traveler, but this is in formula editing, not something you have to pay
Epicor for.
Basically, I have a formula that prints on the traveler that scans in the
job number, $M for enter to move to the next field, and then assembly
sequence, another $M to move to the next field, the Op sequence to move to
the next field, and then a couple more $M's to get to and hit the OK button.
This does not save the steps of having to touch (we also use touch screens)
"Start Activity" and "Production", but after that, they scan one barcode
from the traveler and they are "on the job".
The formula I use is as follows:
IIF ({JOBOPER.BCOPRSEQ} > "" and {@OperVendor} = "",
"*" & Trim ({JOBOPER.JOBNUM}) & "$M" & Trim ({JOBOPER.ASMSEQ}) & "$M" & Trim
({JOBOPER.OPRSEQ}) & "$M" & "$M" & "*"
,"")
I sincerely hope this helps guide you in the direction of using barcodes to
"save steps".
If you would like further information, feel free to ask.
Good luck,
Aaron Hoyt
