Build your own pc?

I second this motion. It's important to know what goes in each box which is why I have mine assembled to my specs. I plan on implementing Shuttle cubes (www.shuttle.com) for my next line of PCs....I have two at home and they run great. Everything is integrated on the MB...just need to add drives and go!

I couldn't agree more. I do something similar, though not the assembly. I could assemble them if I needed to, but I don't. PCUSA has an excellent online store - I pick the exact hardware and software components I want (including OEM software), they put it together and ship it to me. I know exactly what I'm getting when it arrives. They come with the bare-bones operating system installed and nothing else (even if you order MS Office). This allows us to configure them as necessary - something we'll have to do anyway. They provide a 1 year warranty. I've used them for 1 1/2 years - no complaints. Quick turn-around, excellent prices.

Hardware costs depend on where I want to go. Right now, GA-7VAXP Mobo, 2 gig chip AMD athlon, 500 meg DDR ram, 40 gig HD. The Mobo has on board NIC and Sound. Cheap AGP card, cheap CD and Floppy. About $450.00 in hardware. OEM XP pro, and Small Business Office. I forget, about $150.00 each I think. 30 to 40 minutes assembly then the usual amount of time for OS and Office Install. When I do this, its at home, I can do two boxes a night without breaking a sweat. The company pays me $100.00 a box for assembly and software install. The big advantage to me, I KNOW what’s in there, I know it’s all the same, no surprises. Our network was NEVER this stable with a mixed bag of boxes.

Shirley, Todd,

I'm kind of surprised you guy's are still building your own clients! How much do you figure your spending on hardware cost per client?
How many hours do you figure you will put in per client?
What operating system and office version will you install?

Patrick

A lot depends on the client.
Basic minimal user (like shop floor) maybe $450 (incl O/S, no Office)
PowerUser with hot graphics and tons of RAM - $900
Time - less than half an hour to place order (they build it)
O/S - WinXP license but load Win2K
Office (seperate from PC purchase) - Latest version but load Office2K
Because all the components are pretty standard I can get replacements within an hour (drive there). I also know there are no proprietary components or BIOS customization from the vendor as with Dell, Gateway, HP/Compaq and others. Plus I get real O/S disks instead of system recovery disks.

Let me kick in on servers. I specked out a server of a certain
capability at HP and Gateway. Then I specked the same thing with me
building. $24,000.00 from the big guys, $9,000.00 with me building the
same thing. OH by the way, it came on line 9/11/2001. What a day that
was.
