Cell Mfg and Backflushing

What you described below won't work for us unfortunately because you would have to change each step individually on each job to backflush from the job's warehouse. Too much manual labor.

It looks like (on paper) Vantage 5.1 can backflush by WorkCenter. This may work well for us. We'll have to do some testing to see.

Yes, you can override the default warehouse for each material at the job
level. This only allows for a warehouse not the bin, thus you would specify
your cells as warehouses and not bins. It places the default warehouse in
this field but when changed takes priority over the default level.

This setting is found under job material setup within the job. This is the
help file explanation of this field:
--------------------------
Warehouse

Warehouse identifies the warehouse you are planning to issue this material
from. The primary warehouse from the part master file appears as the
default. An allocation will be created against the warehouse indicated
here, if you are not purchasing or making this material.

This field is active only if the part is set up in the part master file, and
neither the Make Direct box nor Purchase Direct box is checked.

If the part is defined but is not set up for the current plant, you can
specify a different plant. The Warehouse field, by default, displays the
default warehouse for that part.

Chicago Warehouse

When you assign a part as a job material, you have three possibilities: it
can be made directly for a job (indicated by the Make Direct checkbox), it
can be pulled from stock (from the warehouse indicated here), or it can be
purchased directly for a job (indicated by this checkbox). All three fields
are mutually exclusive; no two can be activated at the same time.

Assuming these parts are in your inventory this should work.

Hi,
Is anyone using the Cell Manufacturing process and doing backflushing?

We are seriously heading that way. What we want to do is have each Cell (workcenter) supplied with two weeks worth of parts, sealed in a container (one container per assembly). Then at the end of the job, Vantage would backflush (issue) all the parts for the assembly. The problem is: Backflushing takes the parts out of the part's primary bin and warehouse, whereas we may have the same part in a number of different cells. We want the Cell (workcenter) to have it's own bin location so that we can cycle count our inventory and know exactly where it is.

Does ANYONE know of a way to work around this? I know many companies are doing Cell Mfg. now (Lean processing as some call it), and we're stuck on this one glitch to get this working smoothly.

Troy,

We are doing lean/cell manufacturing now and we use the back-flush
method. Many times we have parts in more than one bin and also want to
keep the inventory straight. The one way we have been able to handle it
is the more labor intensive way of issuing these parts directly to the
job at the cell operation. When the shop is ready for the parts, we
issue the parts to the cell and we can select the bin numbers. We do it
manually, but you could use the pick list for each of your assemblies.

Steve

Ps., We have been a little frustrated at using the back-flush function.

We have used the job back-flush of parts at the job completion, but this
often confusing. When you have a long-running job, it shows more part
still in inventory, even when they are not. This is confusing to some.
Vantage still says the parts are in stock, even though they are in the
product.

We have used the job automatic back-flush feature which removes the
parts from stock when labor is applied to the operation they are linked
to. This is frustrating to the stock room, as parts are deducted from
the stock room when someone logs onto the operation in assembly, even
though they are only in the set-up phase and the parts are shown as
issued and gone, even though they are on the shelf..

Hey Troy,

What we do for outside processing workcenters is to create an additional
warehouse for each location with one bin. When the parts are removed from
our warehouse an inventory transfer is issued moving those parts to the
corresponding warehouse offsite. On the job material associated/linked to
that operation you assign the warehouse those parts are to be removed from
using backflushing. Thus we have an idea what inventory we have at each
vendor's location.

At our location, I also use a bin called FLOOR referring to when something
is on the shop floor. An inventory transfer to the shop floor indicates
what is not in a bin and currently in production. I set this up as the
default bin and parts are removed from it.

A couple of ideas we use. I think it sounds like the vendor scenario would
work better for what you wish to accomplish. Making warehouses for each
cell and transfering parts to that warehouse. Set the job materials to
backflush from that warehouse and it should work.

Good luck,

Darren Mann

Darren,
That sounds really close to what we want to do. Are you saying that you can asign Job Material "ABC" to backflush from different warehouses depending what warehouse the job is assigned to? Our exerience is that part "ABC" can have only one primary warehouse and bin, and thus would always backflush from it's primary warehouse, not from the job's warehouse.

Can you elaborate?

Troy

No, you can specify as many warehouses as you like. Multi-Site is for
multiple companies with integrated financials and other processes.
