Could this be the fate of Epicor?

I agree with your thought Shirley that using the "home grown" solution has
it's downside. What about another alternative such as open source software?
This project on SourceForge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/compiere/
produces in their words, "Smart ERP+CRM solution for Small-Medium
Enterprises in the global marketplace covering all areas from customer
management, supply chain and accounting. For $2-200M revenue companies
looking for "brick and click" first tier functionality." Although it is
certain it does not have ALL the functionality of Vantage, the source is
freely available and open for contribution. A scenario where many
companies, like our own, would devote resources to working on a common
project such as this could produce a piece of software that is robust and
fills many of our needs.

I vaguely remember a story about a bunch of local police IT departments
collaborating on a piece of software that runs the business functions
necessary for a police dispatching system. They released this software to
the public and many other police departments collaborated to make the
software even better. I think this is a very compelling alternative.
Especially when considering the costs associated with maintenance and new
modules for a system such as Vantage.

I think the alternative "home grown" software is an even worse prospect.
What happens if the programmer dies. No thanks, been there done that. You
are better off with a commercial product. Longevity is more consistant, and
if you've noticed Epicor publishes its Stock Info. In a real sense, as long
as its making reasonable income, they wont drop it, and if they would screw
up and go bankrupt, you would still have a profitable user base that Oracle
would snap up. And in spite of any recent rant I still think it's a good
product.

I have often wondered about the dangers of using a proprietary software to
run your business. What would happen if Epicor one day decided to drop
their product or went out of business or Progress, etc... What would happen
to the system that runs our company?

Here is a nice article to further fuel the paranoid...
