I tried a similar thing once from CR 8.0 to 8.5 ahead of the "approved" version of Vantage we were using at the time. HUGE nightmare. Not only did not work but my development PC (where I write and modify CR) was totally polluted with .dll files from 8.5 that prevented me from doing anything that would work with Vantage. Vantage 6.1, when installed on clients, loads a bunch of basic Crystal .dll files on the user's PC and these MUST match wjhatever you are doing development wise or they will not run for the client. Now I suppose if you were very knowledgable about CR and all the DLL files you could copy them to the base Vantage DLL folder in mfgsys61 and hopefully all users would "receive" them (assuming you re-install every client)....but miss just one or get any mismatch and POOF your whole reporting platform is up in smoke.

To make matter worse...after attempting th use 8.5 in an 8.0 environment I could not simply uninstall 8.5. It left loads of registry entries and stray DLLs everywhere. It took me weeks to finally clean it out and re-install 8.0. I was on the verge of wiping my hard drive and doing a total PC reload to get the 8.5 junk removed.

When I come to doing my test server for 8.0 I absolutely will not install CR 10 (or Xi or whatever it is then) on my regular development PC. It will go on the test server probably so that I don't get crossed up with my live Vantage 6.1 environment.

Just a little warning.

Hey all you purchasing people (others welcome as well)
Does anyone know why Vantage does not reveal the ship via info in the
history screens? Sometimes it would be nice to see how a product arrived
here, and how I requested it to be shipped. But PO history and receipt
history neglects this. I do the receiving and am sure the fields are used.
Why can't it be shown in the trackers?

Another thing I have hated for years... When creating a PO header, the fax
# is listed above the phone #. No where else in life is the phone number
given second, why would they do that in PO entry?

Sorry for the soap box folks. Does 8.0 do the same thing?

In 8.0 you can customize all your screen so you could very easily swap fax#
and phone# locations on the po header and add ship via to trackers...

In 8.0, both PO tracker and Receipt tracker list ship via.

I don't have access to PO entry to see about the phone/fax listing order,
but PO tracker has phone listed above fax. Besides, in 8.0, if you don't
like how it is laid out, it's possible to rearrange the fields to where you
want them anyway:-)

On many of the screens in 6.1 you can right click on the form and select
Personalize (sometime customization will be available). From there you
can rearrange the screen to change the order of the controls. You might
want to see if the PO Header form has the capability.

6.1 you can personalize the PO Entry screen and move the fax below and the
phone above. It's already that way in the tracker.
As for the ShipVia, it seems to be available in the RecieptTracker, but not
POTracker.

Don't use it to modify the built-in forms. You can safely use it to create
reports using ODBC, but it is my understanding you will damage the built-in
forms if you modify them with a newer version.

I have been told to only use Crystal Reports 8.5 with Vantage 6.1.
But, I do not know if Crystal 10 will work with 6.1.

Word(s) of caution

Probably will not be supported.
Make sure you use it to ONLY change REPORTS and not FORMS.
I have had v9 and 8.5 on my machine fine but it messed up another machine !
