Data access

I think that you can connect to progress using VB.Net.

Although I did not try this VB.NET, I wrote a program in VB6 that
connects to progress db using ODBC.

The connection string is "Provider=MSDASQL.1;Persist Security
Info=False;User ID=sysprogress;Password=sysprogress;Data
Source=Your_DataSource_In_ODBC

Yes, I did. But, VB.NET will only connect to SQL and JET
databases. Must be some kind of internal restriction. I guess they
want you to pony up for the full Visual Studio product.

Hello All,
First time poster and brand new 8.0 user here. I have only recently
discovered this resource and I have lots of Vantage questions but the
one most pressing for me right now is how do all of you (if any of you
do) get to your Vantage tables outside of Vantage? I have used
Microsoft Access to view some table data but this doesn't work for all
the tables. Specifically, I need to get to the Invoice Header and
Detail tables but due to some peculiar data structure I get an error
when I try to link to these tables.

Maybe I already have the necessary tools and I just don't know it
because our administrator back office type training was non-existant.
Can anybody help me with this and/or be willing to talk to me about
how this can be done?

Thanks,
Mike Haynes

Try OpenOffice. OpenOffice 2.0 has a decent database program called Base.
Unlike access, it doesn't have restrictions on the number of indexes per
table. It isn't perfect, and not quite as pretty as Access, but very
functional for designing queries.

We use it for our Progress and MySQL databases.

I would created a sql pass through query in access. If you can link a table
you should be able to created a pass through query. Use your same odbc
connection like you did when you connected to the database and on the query
type EX. "select * from pub.part" (assuming you have a progress db). The
.part is the table. In your case you would want something like "select *
from pub.Invchead" This should return all records in the DB. Large Tables
can take awhile.

You can also create a "view" in the progress database. Someone here
recommended this before and it worked great with Access! How I
understand views, is that they are basically a consolidated table of the
data you actually want. Someone here can probably explain them better.
The problem I had is that Access could not look at a table with more
than 32 indexes. The view solved this problem and also alerted us to
another issue with our row sizes being too long! It must have happened
when we used VB Forms to insert extensive notes. You can create views
using the SQL Explorer Tool. You also have to know a little of the SQL
language as well.

Mike,

Welcome to the board. We are still using 6.1, but I use Access a
lot. We had problems with using the Customer Table, because of too
many indexes, so we had to create a view, as mentioned previously.
I'm not sure if this is the problem you are having, but if it is,
Tech Support will have instructions for you on setting up the view,
it was pretty easy at least it was for 6.1.

If the problem you are having is not due to too many indexes, can you
elaborate on the error? Have you talked to support about it? I'm
really interested in hearing more about the problem and solution that
you come up with.

Thanks,

More on my problem. I have a fair amount of experience using Access
to view/manipulate data so getting to the Vantage tables isn't much
of a problem. Yes, I did run into the > 32 indexes on the customer
file. I'll look into the suggestion of a 'view'. My original
problem which I wrote about here was that I couldn't view the table
data from the invchead and invcdet tables. I kept getting an ODBC
fail message when I tried to peek into the table data with a 'select
*' statement. With much experimentation I've determined that there
is a field within the table that causes the error. If I stay away
from the repsplit field then I can select and view all other fields
in the header table, at least. I've not tried that in the detail.
Since I've discovered that I can get to 99% of the data I can finish
my project which is developing an Access application to track and
pay commissions to our salespeople. Vantage doesn't work for us in
that area. I also tried to use VB .NET but was disappointed to
learn that that product will only access SQL and Jet databases.
Does anyone know if the full Visual Studio .NET product would
connect to Progress via ODBC?

detail.
Since I've discovered that I can get to 99% of the data I can finish my
project which is developing an Access application to track and pay
commissions to our salespeople. Vantage doesn't work for us in that
area.
I also tried to use VB .NET but was disappointed to learn that that
product
will only access SQL and Jet databases.
Does anyone know if the full Visual Studio .NET product would connect to
Progress via ODBC?
Thanks to all who responded.

Think ODBC for Java. Well, except that JDBC can use ODBC sources too...
Did you try using a DSN connection string in VB.Net?

Ie:
DSN=Vantage;HOST=servername;PORT=####;DB=mfgsys;UID=username;PWD=passwor

Yes, I did. But, VB.NET will only connect to SQL and JET
databases. Must be some kind of internal restriction. I guess they
want you to pony up for the full Visual Studio product.
