Data Collection 4.0 Start from desktop?

Chris,

I received the following solution emailed to me by Mike Podlin and Matt
Worzala:
Â
Add the following line to the bottom of your Data Collection.VTG file...
Â
MenuOption=de\dee10.w
Â
That launches Data collection automatically with Vantage.

I tried this and it seems to work very well.

We are going to finally start using Data collection here, we are to begin
Beta testing it with our night shift April 1. I wanted to know if there is
a way to have them click the icon on the desktop and have the data
collection screen open (so that they don't have to go into vantage and then
click the data collection icon in there).

I looked through all the old archives and couldn't find anything about this.
I also went to EraNet and searched and I found several logs of people
calling to request this, Support acknowledging it was a good idea, but was
not possible, and no follow-up. I am assuming that it cannot be done, but I
am hoping that one of you figured out a way:)

Right now, my best idea is to set up the data collection.vtg icon with the
shop floor username/password and add the data collection module to the
favorites bar in vantage and hide everything else so that at least when they
open vantage icon, the data collection icon is the only thing they'll see.

Thanks,

Sarah
I think I tested it once a long time ago in v4 and you
can do it by specifing the dc program as the startup
but it doesn't close out nicely.

We use data collection 100% and have eliminated the use of paper routers and prints.
When you load the data collection client onto a computer it only has data collection and error log icons on it.
I put the a copy of the Vanage icon and place it in the start up folder. When the PC is initiated Vantage launches automatically with just the two icons on it. Then the operator launches from there. We also launch Outlook automatically so that we can use Global Alerts.
So far we have had good success. The only drawback, we are having a hard time keeping the shop employees from closing those applications. Also note that if an employee launches more than one copy of Vantage or more than one copy of Data collection errors occur
on the server and sometimes file locking occurs. We keep the task bar up (not hidden) so that the operator can see one copy each of
Vantage, Data Collection and Outlook.

A related question. Is it possible to disable the "Save settings on exit"
option from the data collection login.
I have a user who really likes to mess with things.
