Different Client Versions on the Same System

Brian,

Don't know if this will help or not, but I'm going around installing the 5.1
client on machines with 3.0. In order to get them both to run, and they
will run simultaneously, is this:

1. Map the network drive to the 5.1 share
2. Disconnect the network drive for the 5.0 share
3. Run unregocx on your 5.0 network drive (or 3.0 in our case) from the 5.1
share
4. Install the 5.1 client
5. Run vcopydll.exe from the 5.1 server
6. Change the shortcut line to v:\vantage\vantage.exe
v:\vantage\vantage.vtg
7. Map the drive for the 5.0 share
8. Reinstall the 5.0 client

Only snafu I could see in this is the 3.0 client has a lot less installed
than the newer versions. I do have 3.0 and 5.1 on different servers and I'm
also using different drive letters - R for 3.0 and V for 5.1. What the
heck, can't hurt to try. Like I always say - "It doesn't work now so I
can't screw it up any more" :-)

I thought you could have the clients for two different versions of Vantage
on your system? I know I did this before with 4.0 and 5.0, but I don't seem
to be able to do it with 5.0 and 5.1. I set my 5.0 shortcut to
"v:\vantage\vantage.exe v:\vantage\vantage.vtg", but it doesn't seem to
help. As soon as installed 5.1, I couldn't get 5.0 to work anymore, I get
the "control-frame: spliter1 error". Of course, the same thing happened when
I reinstalled the 5.0 client, then the 5.1 client broke.

Is this possible to do?

Thanks

Brian,
Are you using different versions of progress for 5.0 and 5.1, or are they both installed under Progress Explorer as 9.1C?

Yes. That is, I installed 9.1C to get 5.1 working. Can the 5.0 client work
with 9.1C?

Yes, I'm running 5.0 live with 9.1C, and testing 5.1 using the same
installation of 9.1C in a EPIC51 folder. I had some problems converting
from 4.0 to 5.0 and Epicor recommended I run 5.0 with 9.1C as it was the new
and improved Progress.

I was referring to the client. My 5.0 and 5.1 installations are on different
servers. I just can't the respective clients to work on the same
workstation.

Thanks
Brian

Sorry about that. I have had 4.0 and 5.0 clients installed and working on a
single workstation but not simultaneously (can run one at a time) so I would
expect 5.0 and 5.1 would work also. I've had to change file associations in
Windows Explorer to switch from one version of Vantage to another.

In Windows Explorer/Folder Options/File Types, look for "Vantage Session",
highlight it, click EDIT, highlight "Open" in the window, and click EDIT
again, and point to the mapped drive for the particular Vantage Version you
want to run.

No problem. I used to have 4.0 and 5.0 clients installed at the same time as
well. In that situation, you don't even have to make any registry changes.
Before you install 5.0, just change your 4.0 shortcuts to specifically run
4.0. I.e. "v:\vantage\vantage.exe v:\vantage\vantage.vtg". I made the same
changes to my 5.0 shortcut before I installed 5.1 client, but it didn't
help.
