Multiple Vantage installations on live server

Yes, you can install all three versions on the same server, my only
suggestion would be to set the older versions main directory to "No Access"
while installing progress for the new version. Progress likes to search your
system for older versions while installing. This will guarantee nothing will
get pathed to the wrong directory.

Subject: [Vantage] multiple Vantage installations on live server.

Hi group,

We are still running version 3 of Vantage and are considering the upgrade to
5 by the first of September. What I am wondering is if I can install
versions 4 and 5 all on the live server without rendering 3 useless. I've
read many posts of test databases being run before conversions but don't
recall reading this specific request.

I know others have installed 4 with 3 or 5 with 4 with success. Has anyone
tried all three and succeeded? What basic steps did you take to accomplish
this?

Ideally, I would like to send our database through the paces of conversions
and see the final results before a live jump. It would also be nice to know
if I could turn 3 back on if on the day of going live with 5, something
disasterous happened. I know, this is probably only possible in a perfect
world. I would also hate to go through the paces of restoring the entire
system from tape backup if the jump failed initially.

Maybe the reason I haven't read about this before is because it is not
possible. I can always dream.

Thanks for any help. If you need more information to answer my question,
please email (or phone) me directly. I choose to receive the vantage posts
in digest form and so I will not see your questions until possibly the
following day.

Thank you,

Ed Smith

Ed,
It's no problem at all running 3, 4, and 5 on the same server. It's as simple as installing them to their own directory. (Usually 3.0 uses: X:\dwc\vantage and x:\dlc\dlcsrv; 4.0 uses X:\epicor\vantage and X:\epicor\progress; and 5.0 uses X:\epic50\vantage and X:\epic50\progress - the first directory is for Vantage, the second is for the version of progress that goes with each version of Vantage.). Of course you can specify your own directories, but you'll only get confused when someone refers to the defaults.

The only place running all three is a problem in a test environment, is that you can only have ODBC installed on a specific workstation for 3 or 4 or 5, not all three at the same time. Although, it's not hard to switch from one to the other and then reboot that workstation.

If you have any more specific questions, please feel free to write.
