Dina,

Personally, 64bit all the way!

Your (his) situation might be different. He really needs to find out
what software they are using (and what version) and if it would be
compatible with Vista 64bit.

The obvious safe bet is Windows XP 32bit. Keep in mind that XP is
already 7 - 8 years old, with Windows 7 due out at the end of this year.
Contrary to what others are saying at least 95% of all software and
hardware will run on 64bit Vista. The exceptions being older software
and hardware, which might be the case here.

I will second the motion to buy direct from Dell. I also recommend their
outlet store www.dell.com/outlet a good way to save a couple extra $'s
if you don't mind refurbished.

FYI - we have seen significant improvements in our CAD/CAM dept. running
Linux and 64 bit hardware with a 32 bit application (Genesis2000 by
Frontline/Orbotech). The most significant when we went from a Core2 Duo
to the new Intel I7 (quad core) with our benchmarks showing an 80%
improvement. YMMV.

Good Morning. My brother in law wants to buy a laptop for home. Right
now the laptop will be mainly used for internet surfing but his father
owns
a construction company (school and hospital renovations) and eventually
John
will be doing job bidding with this compute. He does not know what
software
they will be using to do this. Anyways, he went to the store last night
and the sales guy tried to sale him one that was 64 Bit. My first
response
was NO, stay away since all software and hardware is not compatible with
64
Bit. But John (my brother in law) said the sales guy insisted that every
coming out is going 64 bit and he is buying old technology with a 32
bit.

So I thought I would ask the group, since so many of you are computer
genius. Would you buy a 64 bit computer?

Genius...er, no. Definitely not. Ask my wife. But I definitely would and have bought 64-bit CPU PCs. Seems most all of our desktops lately are AMD Athlon-64. do we get full use....no. Not with 32-bit Windows-XP. The Athlons (and Intel's too I suppose) dumb down for whatever OS is used. To really utilize the 64-bit processor would require a 64-bit OS and applications designed for the more complex instruction sets. Then it would also rquire 64-bit drivers. If everything is singing from the same page it can work very well and the future is probably headed that way. But right now probably not a big advantage. Especially on a laptop where you're not going to put 100GB of RAM in it. The 32-bit 4GB max is about all most people put in a laptop. Besides I suspect the 64-bit processor would suck more juice from the battery meaning shorter battery time.

For web and spreadsheet on a laptop I would not pay any extra for 64-bit and if there was a deal on 32-bit I would save the money. IMHO.

By the time everything is 64-bit (i.e. 64-bit is required), the laptop would be obsolete anyway.
For what you describe of the usage, I recommend a 4 GB of RAM, back-side of the bell-curve Windows XP laptop.
You will pay extra for the 64-bit and not be taking advantage of it in any discernible way.
Nothing wrong with old technology. Beer is old technology.
If a $10 claw hammer from Sears gets teh job done, why use a jackhammer?

It seems that a good percentage of the processors being sold today will
be 64-bit capable processors. IMHO - It doesn't hurt to buy a machine
with a 64-bit processor, but I agree that it doesn't make sense today to
install a 64-bit operating-system, for which there are few applications
that will utilize the advanced technology, and few drivers for the
everyday peripherals you're likely to want to use.

Microsoft doesn't charge any more for the 64-bit versions of its OS than
it does for the 32-bit. In fact, a few of us have ended up running
64-bit WinSrv2003 simply because it supports more than 4GB RAM without
having to splurge on WinSrv2003 Enterprise Edition (an issue worth
discussion, but not now). If the salesman is telling you that you're
getting a good deal on the system because you're getting a good price
for the 64-bit OS, you might want to call him out on his out-and-out lie
and suggest he learn more about his product before making such false
claims.

Max out the RAM of whatever you buy, and get a 32-bit OS (or at least
get it on disk and re-install on your own). If you're debating between
a faster processor with less RAM and a slower machine with more RAM,
that's a tough call. I'd take RAM over processor (especially if the
difference is only fractions of a gigahertz), but RAM is a lot
easier/cheaper to change or upgrade down the road...

have bought 64-bit CPU PCs. Seems most all of our desktops lately are AMD
Athlon-64. do we get full use....no. Not with 32-bit Windows-XP. The Athlons
(and Intel's too I suppose) dumb down for whatever OS is used. To really
utilize the 64-bit processor would require a 64-bit OS and applications
designed for the more complex instruction sets. Then it would also rquire
64-bit drivers. If everything is singing from the same page it can work very
well and the future is probably headed that way. But right now probably not
a big advantage. Especially on a laptop where you're not going to put 100GB
of RAM in it. The 32-bit 4GB max is about all most people put in a laptop.
Besides I suspect the 64-bit processor would suck more juice from the
battery meaning shorter battery time.

For web and spreadsheet on a laptop I would not pay any extra for 64-bit and
if there was a deal on 32-bit I would save the money. IMHO.

Subject: [Vantage] [off topic] Laptop for home/personal
Importance: High

Good Morning. My brother in law wants to buy a laptop for home. Right
now the laptop will be mainly used for internet surfing but his father owns
a construction company (school and hospital renovations) and eventually John
will be doing job bidding with this compute. He does not know what software
they will be using to do this. Anyways, he went to the store last night
and the sales guy tried to sale him one that was 64 Bit. My first response
was NO, stay away since all software and hardware is not compatible with 64
Bit. But John (my brother in law) said the sales guy insisted that every
coming out is going 64 bit and he is buying old technology with a 32 bit.

So I thought I would ask the group, since so many of you are computer
genius. Would you buy a 64 bit computer?

Thank you,

Due to the arrangement that we have with Dell, all technical support and
warranty services on Dell computers purchased through Best BuyR must be
obtained through the Geek SquadR counters at your local store. While our
partnership with Dell is a fairly recent development, our stores should
still be very familiar with the processes; I am sorry if you have not found
this to be the case in your communication with the stores.

Please keep in mind though that if it is determined that your laptop's
hinges did not crack as the result of a factory defect or standard
wear-and-tear, you may be provided an estimate for the completion of
repairs. Most factory warranties do not cover accidental damages, including
those provided on Dell computers purchased through Best BuyR stores and
BestBuy.com.

I recall reading somewhere that Dell does not service a laptop purchased at
Best Buy. You must use the Geek Squad. Seriously consider buying direct.

Thanks Todd. The laptop is a good deal from our local best buy. He said
he is getting a Dell 4 GB - not sure of the process speed but he said it is
a Core 2 Duo for $700.00. 250GB Hard drive. Windows Vista 64 Bit. $700
seems to be the same price for the 32 bit.

YMMV.

Jim
