ALL of the AMD and Intel CPUs in the last few years have 64 bit mode. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64 for all the gory details.

As Ted suggested, a virtual PC may be the best way to go. You will also find they're useful for MANY other things as well; eg: software testing -- if you have some new package you want to try, load it in a VPC. If you don't like it, or it hoses something up, you can just roll the VPC's disk image back to its initial state. Really beats messing up your "real" pc.

We are upgrading our Terminal Server and Database Server soon to make ready
for version 8. We intend running Windows Enterprise on the Terminal Server
to maximize the number of users and would like to set all servers to run on
64 bit. I am advised that Vantage 8.0 is ok with 64 bit but we will need to
continue to run Vantage 6.1 on these new servers for 6 months or more while
we set up and test V8. Has anyone run Vantage 6.1 on 64 bit successfully?

John,

6.1 as far as I have tried will not work on an x64 Operating System,
at least the client portion.

I run 2 CAD/CAM machines with Dessault Systems CATIA and they require
Windows XP x64 and I have been unsuccessful in installing the Vantage
client on them.

As far as Vantage 8 goes, I am running 8.03.404 with no problems on
x64 Server and x64 Windows XP.

This would negate the reason for running the 64 bit operating system. A 32
bit OS can only access so much system memory.

Have you tried to do anything by running a virtual machine on these stations
with Vantage running under that? You could try Microsoft's Virtual PC (it
is now free) or go with something like Parallels for PC or any of the VMWare
products. What you would be doing is running a 32 bit version of Windows
inside of the 64 bit version. Make sure that you pay attention to the
licensing issues associated with virtual machines.

John,

We are running the Vantage client on XP64. The problem is with the
Vantage installer, however the Progress client installer runs fine in
a 64bit environment. Just run the progress client alone (found
in '<Vantage drive letter>:\prgs91d\netsetup').

You can then copy the Vantage desktop shortcuts found on a 32bit
desktop to the 64bit machine. Keep in mind that you will have to
manually create the temp folder (commonly set to 'c:\mfgsys61') too.

Let me know how you make out.

We're in the process of doing the first test upgrade from 6.1 to
8.03.404. The upgrade path is very un-documented, be prepared to
call tech support many times. What I do know for sure is that 6.1
will not run on x64 Windows 2003 Server (Progress 9.1d will not
install). However, 8.03 will run on x64. I was advised by tech
support to do the upgrade process on any Windows XP computer, and
then in the end, copy the final database over to the x64 server with
8.03.404.

Well it would allow you to buy your 8.0 64bit server and continue
running 6.1 on it until you could go to 8.
