E9 Prog to E10 Migration

Want to give an update.

I have been trying to Migrate my Progress DB to SQL.  I started with 10.1.400 R 13, but my interim DB would get stuck.  I was following the Progress to SQL 10.1.400 Migration procedure.

Called EPICOR Support and then recommended to use the 10.0.700 procedure and to first go to 10.0.700, convert the DB and then later upgrade to 10.1.400.

First the procedure is different just before the actual migration.  The DB did the Open Edge Migration and it is moving along with the other tasks now.  Well at least for me, there is no such thing as a Progress to SQL 10.1.400.

I am on Task ID 10.  It started around 5AM 7/13 and was able to see the interim SQL DB grow until 1214am 7/14…doesn’t seem like any movement anymore.  What log would I look at to see if anything is happening?

are you coming from Progress? what's your DB Size?
I say kill it and look at the log the conversion throws up...Â
What's Task 10? most of us haven't memorized the conversion schedule lol

Looks like it borked... Crap it , look at those Data Transfer Error files particularly that one that says NonUTF...looks rather largeÂ
Did you run the Data Scrubbers etc?
Also threads is 20.... I don't recall... is that the default? If not I'd set it to whatever the default is

Looks like your DB hasn't been modified since at least midnight. I say kill it, look at all those logs, try and fix as much as you can lather rinse repeat.

I've had this same experience each time I've done a migration, doesn't
matter if I'm migrating to 10.0 or 10.1. My db is 87Gb, and I found that
my ChgLog table was the final table it was migrating because of it's size
(almost 20Gb).

In Task Manager under Processes, you should see _progres.exe under the
image name, you might see more than one. These are the threads that are
handling the migration from Progress to SQL. When the migration was
extremely active, you should have seen up to 20 of the _progres.exe
process, but now there might only be 1 because it's on a large table.

What you are experiencing sounds similar to what my problem was, not sure
if my migration is unique or if it's the norm. My first migration took
almost 3 days, but I had slow discs. My most recent migration took almost
a full day.

I've done tens of migrations and none of them have taken over a day for the initial conversion from Progress...

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

Most of the  *DataTranferErrors are because of overflow characters…  the MemoDat issue is the Null Memo Date.

Default for threads is 4, which earlier was at 10 but we forgot to turn off Updates and the server restrated on Wednesday morning. But since it stated it is based on Progress License and System, I bumped it to 20 and that is when I saw the 20 progres.exe processes.

I am using a physical server with three disks that are all SSD.  I restarted it with 4 threads.

Data scrubbing was done and the fixes applied.  Everything had passed and I am using the backup of that DB.

Thanks for the help guys.

FWIW - we migrated from V8 to E10
I used 2 VMs one for V8 and one for V9
I started with a dump and load on the V8 VM. I deleted the chglog.d file before loading
I deleted all BAQs, BPMs and Customizations before the final migration to E10
Any non fatal errors in data conversion were noted in trial runs and 'fixed' using BPMs in the V9 version
Customizations, BAQs and BPMs developed in the E10 testing process were exported using Solution manager and installed in the final E10 migration.

Still after months of 'testing' E10, the number of issues that were not discovered during 'testing' phase was overwhelming day one of go live - Makes me wonder how thorough the 'testing' really was :/

Good luck on you 'upgrade'

Thanks.

I was thinking about the amount of releases there has been in 700 and 400.  I remember two years ago the CEO at insights stated that there will be rigorous testing.  Just seem that are so many updates on a version that should have less issues.  Cant wait to start testing.

I've had this same experience each time I've done a migration, doesn't matter if I'm migrating to 10.0 or 10.1. My db is 87Gb, and I found that my ChgLog table was the final table it was migrating because of it's size (almost 20Gb).

In Task Manager under Processes, you should see _progres.exe under the image name, you might see more than one. These are the threads that are handling the migration from Progress to SQL. When the migration was extremely active, you should have seen up to 20 of the _progres.exe process, but now there might only be 1 because it's on a large table.

What you are experiencing sounds similar to what my problem was, not sure if my migration is unique or if it's the norm. My first migration took almost 3 days, but I had slow discs. My most recent migration took almost a full day.
