We are having an issue with the engineering workbench not working properly.
When two users are in the same ECO group, even if they are not viewing or
working on the same part, when the first user tries to save the record, he
is given a message saying the record has been modified by another user and
he has to refresh. It will never let him save anything until only one user
in the ECO group. It has been in development's hands for a couple months
with no sign of progress. What I want to do in the meantime is check for
users in ECO groups before letting other users sign into them. Is there a
table that would tell me if anyone is logged into a group or not. There is
a "locked" field in ecogroup table but it never changes value when users
check in and check out of each group. Thanks for the help,

Daniel

On the main tab when entering your group ID, you can un-check the
single user box. This should allow multiple users within the same
group.

If it is an active (still unresolved) case with Epciro development - it is clearly a bug (and not just a matter of single versus mitli-user group configuration).

Even in a single user group, I get this message all the time... Even though the 'other user' is ME (or the app itself doing something in the background).

I think you have a LONG wait until they resolve the design paradigm... I just don't see how they can get it to work multi-user until they make some significant changes.

That Single User checkboxes in company config and in the ECO group both
don't work at all. No matter what is checked or unchecked, multiple users
can log in and if there are more than one users logged in, they will get the
"record has been modified by another user" message.

I may be incorrect, but the single user check box that you are referring to
under company set the default when you are creating a new ECO group. If you
have already created the group the check box need to be changed under the
ECO group itself.

In Engineering Workbench, are we allowed to attach multiple
manufactured parts to same ECO group? If so how?

v8.03.404

TIA
Actions menu: Check out Part. (Just keep doing that for each part you want in the ECO group.)

Hi, I'm wondering, is there any real life application/benefits that we
can get out of using ECO groups and the ways we structure ECOs?

I've gone through all the past treads on ECO Group and some suggested
using an engineer's name as the ECO Group, while others suggested
using a Project base, while one from a medical industry creates a new
Group ID per ECO number.

I'm sitting here, thinking about, what's the actual use of having
ECOs? Is it worth the problem to create more than one ECOs?

I'm actually thinking about creating a single ECO only, called MAIN.
All parts will be checked out to this MAIN ECO when needed, and
checked in again after the needed updates are made.

Any disadvantages in doing it in such a way? Compared with the methods
used by majority of the other users in this user group(creating ECOs
based on Engineer Name)

What advantages are there anyway? Do we get a report of all changes to
the checked out parts grouped under the ECO Group ID, or something useful?

Thanks in advance~!
The nice thing about having an ECO group for each user, when something
doesn't get checked back in you know who checked it out.

I agree with Patrick. Visibility to who has the part checked out it
critical in our business so we don't use the whole users name just their
user ID. An ECO group of MAIN would not work in our environment.

In addition to the benefit of quickly knowing who is working on a part, we also use it to "park" parts waiting for updates. We often have revisions that affect a range of parts, while only one is needed immediately. By checking out a set of parts to the ECO group, the remaining parts stay on the engineer's "to do list", in effect.

It depends upon your specific business needs and typically engineering processes.

If you are Engineer to order (or, say if you are introducing a new product or are heavily project based), using unique ECOs is simply a time saver as once parts are checked into an ECO, they are rapidly recalled from Engineer's workbench if a mass engineering efffort is a multi-day/week/month event.

If you are doing quick single Method edits and have multiple Engineers doing many throughout the day in parallel, using persistent engineer name based ECOs is handy as it provides a historical audit trail of who did what & when. It also allows multiple users to seperate their work for quick recall (even if it is only over a lunch break).

If none of this potentially benefits you, don't use it. Either use Quick Change or (as you proposed) use a single persistent multi-user ECO group.

It is a Swiss Army Knife. You just have to figure out which is the right typical tool within it to use to just cover the needs of the typical job.

The answer may be more than one as you may have all the conditions above simultaneously. (We do.)
