Epicor on SQL Server Management Studio?

Microsoft does have a free versions of SQL Server Management Studio
Express that can connect to various versions of SQL.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7593 is one example.

We are in the process of planning a full reimplementation, going from Vantage 6.1 to E9. Because we have developed several rather complex external "applications" in both MS Access and SQL Server (free version) that extract data from Vantage via ODBC, it is our belief that we should switch from a Progress backend to SQL Server, so that we can migrate these applications accordingly.

Epicor is quoting us SQL Server "Runtime", which I don't think gives us the full suite of tools that would be available in SQL Server Management Studio.

Has anyone else out there installed Epicor in conjunction with SQL Server Management Studio as I've described? Any issues/concerns?

Double check and ensure nothing has changed in the E9 model, but when I have
bought Vantage SQL versions in the past (8.03.xxx), it comes with everything
SQL including the Mgmt Studio. That should be a question your CAM can
easily answer, if not, ask your CAM to email Ben Nixon inside Epicor.

I just looked at our docs and we have SQL Enterprise Runtime. It has SQL Studio and can do any stored procs, etc you would want.

Management Studio is just a tool for accessing the database, its not a
licensing option. If you purchased the Runtime license, you would not be
able to use the database for anything other than base Epicor, which it
sounds like you want to do. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917400
