Error 53 Communicating with ProService 9.1C

Issue Resolved. It turns out I had an environment variable for ODBC set wrong: c:\epic51\progess\progress.cfg instead of c:\epic51\progRess\progress.cfg. That R cost me three days of headaches. My thanks goes to Dave at Epicor for step-by-step sleuthing of this issue.

Thanks Dave.

P.S. I did meet some helpful folks at PEG (Progress E-mail Group) (almost as helpful as you guys). www.peg.com Any Progress issues can be taken there for help. I've installed Vantage/Progress at least 20 times. This time I'm baffled.
On my test laptop, I installed a new hard drive. I reinstalled
Vantage/Progres no problem. Procontrol (yes, I'm using procontrol for
various reasons) starts up fine. Then I install an updated Ethernet card
driver on the laptop. Now procontrol says "Error 53 Communicating with
ProService". The error log says

Wed Nov 13 22:02:27 2002
22:02:27 BROKER 0: Multi-user session begin. (333)
22:02:27 BROKER 0: Begin Physical Redo Phase at 4864 . (5326)
22:02:28 BROKER 0: Physical Redo Phase Completed at blk 4964 off 5456 upd 0.
(7161)
22:02:28 BROKER 0: This version of PROGRESS does not support a database
server. (1733)
22:02:28 BROKER 0: Begin normal shutdown (2248)
22:02:29 BROKER : Multi-user session end. (334)

I uninstalled the driver for the Ethernet Card, and Vioula, Procontrol
worked and I was in Vantage. On the next reboot, however, I was asked to
install the Ethernet card. Now Procontrol won't work again. uninstalling
the Ethernet card doesn't fix it this time. I've tried disabling the
Ethernet Card, using the oldest drivers, using the newest drivers, using no
drivers... No go. Why would it work one time, and then not another? I can
stick the old hard drive back in and Vantage works, so I know that the
hardware (aside from the hard drive) is not the problem.

When I add NetBeui as a protocol, the error changes to "Vantage 5.1 ERROR:
Unable locate Lock (.lk) file." after about 1 minute of waiting.
uninstalling NetBeui and trying again brings back the "Error 53 message."
I'm baffled. Any ideas of what's going on?

Does anyone know how to get on the progress user's group? Maybe someone there has seen this before.
