Frideas! August 1, 2025

On Friday, it’s EpiUsers Frideas Day! Have you been to the Epicor Ideas Portal recently? If so, are there some ideas you want to encourage other users to vote for? Maybe want to add comments to an existing idea?

I’ll just throw some advice out there - NEVER put an Idea in the ICE Tools section.

22 days and mine is still pending approval.

Yes, there are 512 Ideas there:

But mine is only the 21st Idea to be originated there - meaning that I actually picked ICE Tools in the list when I made the Idea:

DON’T DO THAT.

What the other 491 people did is to throw it under Kinetic (or anything else) and then let the admins move it.

So do that. Otherwise your Idea goes to the graveyard.

Anyway, someday vote for me!

Saw this today. We all know this issue but I guess this is the first Idea for it?!

Yes, I know you can use CSV. But wouldn’t it be nice to export an SSRS report into an Excel file that you could actually use the moment it opens?

(Or you know, let us use part number as a filter in the Inventory WIP Reconciliation report…)

Improve Native Report Output for Excel

I do the Excel+Data, that creates a custom report that you can design and can put a table in. I don’t think they’d develop something new when we have the ability already.

Interesting… is there a manual on this?

I create an Excel report style and strip out all of the formatting. Works great. You can also get the data to split into tabs in Excel.

Ha, not trying that yet!

I guess this is common?

I create a new SSRS report RDL/Style and put the data into a Table or Matrix. They export to Excel perfectly.

You all ever get tired of doing Epicor’s work for them, though?

Also, then you have to sustain/maintain your RDL to incorporate whatever new data they add to the RDD - data that you didn’t know or care about because you’ve never even heard of deferred revenue on service contracts, but one day someone will ask why it’s not on your version of the report, etc.

Just saying, usable reports out of the box would be nice.

Only daily! As I just mentioned in other thread, “Sing it sister!”

I know, touché - I mean, that’s like the definition of this forum.

Users helping Users do Epicor’s work for them.

I know it’s rather absurd to complain about that - it literally keeps most of us employed.

But I’d be fine with these nuisance things being fixed and then I can move on to some other challenge.

The problem here though is that I don’t see this as an Epicor issue, this is how SSRS outputs to excel/word/etc, it keeps all the formatting, etc, that is why a dedicated SSRS report that only has tables and things like that without fancy formatting, headers, logos, etc works so much better.

It would be nice if they developed dedicated excel only versions of certain reports, particularly in the GL reports area (I don’t see much value in a Sales Order in Excel personally) but I also know they have the Financial Report Designer or similarly named thing so that is likely their defence on that front.

(I added the bold)

Well, yes, agreed, that would be fine, too. Because…

Like you say, it’s kind of just a handful of reports. It’s the ones you just can’t do with a BAQ (or there’s no good sense in reinventing it yourself) - like the ones that require use of the Posting Engine.

Or the ABC code algorithm. (For the sake of argument, that is. In reality, that algorithm is opaque and not all that necessary in and of itself - you can make a perfectly serviceable BAQ of usage yoursefl, and upload your own ABC codes. Runs a lot faster, too.)

I definitely do not consider this Epicor’s work to do. Businesses need to move away from using Excel as a crutch and actually use the system.

Plus, it only takes 15 minutes to do once the business has provided what columns they want.

Tell me how to run the Inventory WIP Reconciliation Report for a single part number and I’ll stop using the crutch.

What do you mean by this? Are you saying you want to run for the part on a job? are you trying to run for a material? You have not provided enough info for me to tell you how.

Every transaction of part 12345 for the month and all the accounts it hits.

From this, you learn fun things like how inconsistently the logic is applied for GL accounts. (Not a bug - working as designed.)

Hate to say it, but that behavior is fully documented. If you don’t want that to happen, don’t set up your parts as non quantity bearing. Doing that tells the system you think the part is an expense and should be tracked that way. :man_shrugging:

Right I could go on about that but that’s not the point.

You’ve never needed to research the financials of a single part number? Or a pack slip? Or any other info in the IWR that is not the job number, tran type, date, or account number?

Safe Harbor Statement

:safe_harbor:

While I cannot yet release the information here yet, I can safely say that one of the features of the new reporting tool that we are examining to replace SSRS/Crystal does have some built in Excel export functionality that may be stronger than what is embedded in SSRS. Since we dont have it to play with, i can only go by the documentation.

Note that it also seems to have the native ability to print barcodes and QR Codes. It also is supposed to be easier to use as a label printer, so it might replace the need for using BarTender.

HOPEFULLY we will be able to make an announcement soon on this new tool! we will NOT be waiting until Insights… we will announce as soon as we possibly can. You all will be second to hear (after I hear)
