Very well written Carol. Gets to the basic issues quickly. There are many
CPA's who spend time fighting the need for their clients to have to collect
sales tax for a state.

As far as Sales Tax goes. If you have not established nexxus (met the
states requirements...varies by state), you not only do not have to collect
the tax, but you cannot charge the tax. You must be registered with the
state to collect and then file reports.
If you have established nexxus and are filing within a state does not
automatically mean that you are required to also collect for the city or
counties (varies widely by state).
Each of your customers is required to file Use Tax (for all invoices where
they didn't get charged and should have).
Talk to a tax specialist. If you are going to begin registering with all
the states, you may be looking at an additional hire to handle the quarterly
forms. You might get lucky and get a specialist whose opinion is that you
do not need to or one who suggests a wait and see attitude (wait and see if
you are 'kindly' asked to by the state).

Unfortunately not. 99.9% of our product is tax exempt -
manufacturing
process, not end user.
The suggestion was made about contacting the State Dept. of Revenue
which
may help with information on counties. Another is making a request
of your
customers to provide the info. Time consuming up front, but could
be part
of the customer set up process (we have to get tax exempt
certificates as
part of our customer set up process).
Indiana has a 5% sales tax. No county sales taxes that I am aware
of. We
are in central Indiana.

The URL was a help for the percentages thank you, but I need to
still
ascertain when the local taxes for each County apply to our product.
Any ideas,
Kim
