While I didn't go, my manager did and told me about this. I was quite
surprise at this fact, especially since on a recent work road trip, not only
did our hotel have free wireless, but so did the Denny's on I-75 where we
stopped for breakfast on the way down.

For me the perspectives was a great conference. It was my first time there and I learned
more in these 4 days then in the last months (especially I heard about this group!).
The only thing is, that for one person the conference is just too much information. You
should come with at least two people to cover most of the important things.

I really enjoyed meeting everyone but I wish there were dining tables
for Vantage 8 users as I wanted to link up with others who are
using/implementing it.

The sessions were excellent, and I hope to go again next year and even
have our Controller/Treasurer go as well as my DB admin (only the CFO
and I went this year). Even though I only went for 2.5 days, there is a
bit of information overload, but the workbooks should help refresh my
memory.

Everyone's help was greatly appreciated as well as meeting many on this
Yahoo group.

Sorry - it's been a mad house at work since returning. I think I posted a brief recap in another topic thread previously but here are some other comments...

1. There was much more emphasis on labs and the lab rooms were much larger (with more PCs). Labs also were scheduled on Sunday afternoon so this effectively expanded the conference to 3-1/2 days (4 if you golfed). Maybe it was just because I was more interested in them but there seemed to be an emphasis on labs for dashboards, customization and personalization in 8.0.

2. The "lab" or just plain general session I most wanted to see but did not was on the basic "mechanics" of 8.0. The underlying architecture and administration details. I would really like to learn more about how it all works, which software components do what and some "best practices" tips. This sort of detail was missing from the agenda.

3. The migration steps for getting from 6.1 to 8.0 were the same old story. Very light on details and 7 of the 8 steps seemed to be "hire an Epicor consultant". What exactly would "schedule resource for installation" mean other than hire them to install it? Actually the push to use consulting was toned down a bit but from what I was hearing from people doing it on your own is still like a journey in the dark - you're on your own. My biggest gripe was that there was not a session for step by step guidance on installing 8.0 on a test server (see #2 above).

4. There was a lot of verbal confusion about Crystal Xi (special Epicor version) and XI (as in roman numeral 11) which would be Crystal 11. I might be wrong but my impression was 8.0 uses Crystal 10 (not 11) and that Xi is 10 with adaptations (and pricing) for Vantage 8.0. Still I heard many people talking about Crystal 11 too - was it just me or were they too confused? I never did see a session on what exactly Crystal Xi is (see #2 above).

5. Another bit of confusion (maybe just me) was about the difference in how the workstation interacts with the server. My gut feeling (all I have because this was not explained well anywhere) is that all the visible stuff is generated on the workstation saving bandwidth for the data that fills in the blanks -AND- that all the selected data (sometimes how much is up to the user) is shoveled off to the workstation for processing then transactions for updates are sent back to the DB. Thus, if you do as in 6.1 and earlier and "select all" you are going to severely impact performance. I'm not sure if I am right about this because there was no good explanation of the interaction between workstation and server (see #2 above).

6. I was hugely impressed (and a little frightened) by the depth to which the UI can be customized - in particular what a person skilled in VB.net can do. A really nice feature...saving multiple customizations and allowing them to be "exported". The Yahoo Group is going to need a much larger upload area.

7. The general sessions were OK for getting background info on Epicor and "the state of the company" - which I like to monitor so I know they will be around for awhile - but at least this year they were much shorter. There was some mention in the Vantage/Vista general session about a roadmap of future versions (like 8.05) but these were really light on content and specific changes between versions.

8. The food lines at lunch were really long - way too long. When 20 sessions let out all at once it does not make a lot of sense to keep half the lines closed waiting for people to come later while 50 or more people are queued up at the few serving lines that are open. On top of which the few that are open end up depleted and people are waiting for restocking making the lines that much longer while perfectly good food is waiting in the closed lines. My gripe here is that I wanted to get in, eat, talk with tablemates, get out and visit hall of solutions and vendor pavilion area (one in the same) before the afternoon sessions started.

9. It was really nice they had the PCs for checking email outside the exhibit area and available for longer hours. But there were only 10 and the lines were long. Not sure if this was demand related or if it was because those using them seemed to tie them up a long time (mostly while trying to type while also on cell phones). Perhaps they need a sign encouraging speed if people are waiting....or those timers they use for chess matches.

Cliff, for your specific questions on T1 links and document linking for Part file info (within Job and Part tracker) I was not able to find info on but my sense from other conversations there as well as info here on the board is that 10 users at the other end of a T1 will not be a big problem and if the document linking is not there as promised then customization will be able to do the trick. So I don't see any show stoppers in 8.0 for these issues.

All in all it was still a very worthwhile conference even if I came away with more questions than I left with. I did gain a lot of insight into customization potential and how this will impact my investigation for upgrading. The result of the 8.0 info I obtained (and from comments on this group) is that we are delaying our upgrade investigation by a few more months and won't attempt a test server to play around with 8.0 until after the start of 2006. This would push a "go live" date into mid-2007 for us. So....I will have one more Perspectives for them to address the "mechanics" questions ( see #2 above ;) ) if I still have them then.

I did not attend the party Tuesday night (again). It is really hard to justify $75 for my wife to attend with me. We decided early on that for us that $75 was better spent checking out the Star Trek Experience at the LV Hilton (now a short monorail ride from the Flamingo). My 2 cents....it was worth it once (barely) if you are a trekkie and can devote the time to read all of the displays and look at the exhibits but the two shows alone are not worth the full price. They also need to update the whole experience - especially place the ship consoles with LCD screens and "real" interactive screens tied into the "story". Now that we've been there and done that....once was OK but I would not do it again for that price.

Question for other attendees who had spouse/guest attend with them and got the full meal/party guest pass.....did they have tables at lunch designated for "guests" so spouses would not have to sit and listen to discussion of manufacturing and computers? My wife's biggest worry about the guest package was having to endure boring computer talk at lunch.

Because I signed up late, I didn't get to stay at the luxurious Caesars,
but at the Flamingo ($100/night wasn't bad, but my room sucked but my
CFO got a huge upgrade - guess it pays to wear a tie at the reception
desk). I was thinking that to reduce the lines at the available PCs,
Epicor should contract with Caesar's (or whoever) next year and have
Perspective Attendees get free Internet in their room (again, since I
wasn't there, I don't know what those at Caesars got).

Those at Caesars got Internet that did not work very well in their room
for 11.95 per day. I ended up complaining and they refunded my Internet
fees.

All in all I was kind of disappointed with the service as a whole at
Caesars. I have been there on several occasions in the past and had
become used to a very high level of service. That level of service is no
longer there in my opinion.

I found this, my first Perspectives informative. The topics were broad and
well timed to allow me to attend most of the topics I wanted to. I found
the Labs educational, but more for the fact that I was getting to play with
8.0 than the subject material most of the time. I found sessions with
question and answer more suited to my needs. I picked up some very valuable
tips from Doug Williams during my presentations as well as in other session.
I found being able to address the whole Qmail/BAM problem with some live
faces much more satisfying, even if they don't fix it, I now feel like
someone was really listening.
The time offset for me (3 hours) was a downer as I was up by 3:00am each
morning (this came in handy for catching the plane Thursday morning) and
unable to last much past 9:00pm. But then again, the weather was not the
best anyway, so I did not feel like a missed that much. Next time I am
bringing better walking shoes and a lighter laptop.
The Hall of Solutions was great. I hit most of the booths just before they
shut down and missed most of lunch that day. But to find out that there is
someone out there that has a wireless data collection interface that bolts
onto Vantage 6.1 (and beyond, but I did not check for earlier) and allows
handheld scanners that pump information into and out of Vantage in real time
was a particular gem. I intend to follow up on that product in the near
future as the benefits would be huge. I was sad to miss the IBM showing of
their convertible tablet, getting there just in time for them to point and
laugh at the cement block (all though it was an IBM) I was carrying around.
I was bummed to miss Sunday, arriving at around 10:00pm, but it was a real
boost to have the Boss and his wife along and be greeted by Jeff Glaze (EUG
rep, NEVUG Pres.) calling me by name at the front door of Caesars. I have
known him for a while (since 1 week after I first saw Vantage), but to be
greeted at the door was a nice.
Overall, it was well worth the money and time as we prep to go to 8.0 in 6
months or so.
Now for the tips to make all that reading worth while.

1. If you are writing and testing BAMs with .P files, create a local copy
of your .mfg file used to start vantage and remove the -q parameter. This
eliminates the need to restart Vantage each time you change the code. I
figure this saved me about 1-2 hours per week.
2. If you are trying to launch Excel from a .p to open a .csv or excel
file, try using the DOS SILENT command to launch a shortcut (.lnk) to the
Excel.exe and add on the file you wish to open with a space separating it
from the .lnk. It was taking 15 to 30 seconds to launch Excel using the
.exe, but changing to a .lnk made it instant. Don't ask me why it works,
but give it a try. It works well for Internet Explorer as well. I did not
pick this up at perspectives, but just figured it out recently.

Those at Caesars got Internet that did not work very well in their room
for 11.95 per day. I ended up complaining and they refunded my Internet

All in all I was kind of disappointed with the service as a whole at

Because I signed up late, I didn't get to stay at the luxurious Caesars,
but at the Flamingo ($100/night wasn't bad, but my room sucked but my
CFO got a huge upgrade - guess it pays to wear a tie at the reception
desk). I was thinking that to reduce the lines at the available PCs,
Epicor should contract with Caesar's (or whoever) next year and have
Perspective Attendees get free Internet in their room (again, since I
wasn't there, I don't know what those at Caesars got).

Sorry - it's been a mad house at work since returning. I think I posted
a brief recap in another topic thread previously but here are some other
comments...

1. There was much more emphasis on labs and the lab rooms were much
larger (with more PCs). Labs also were scheduled on Sunday afternoon so
this effectively expanded the conference to 3-1/2 days (4 if you
golfed). Maybe it was just because I was more interested in them but
there seemed to be an emphasis on labs for dashboards, customization and
personalization in 8.0.

2. The "lab" or just plain general session I most wanted to see but did
not was on the basic "mechanics" of 8.0. The underlying architecture
and administration details. I would really like to learn more about how
it all works, which software components do what and some "best
practices" tips. This sort of detail was missing from the agenda.

3. The migration steps for getting from 6.1 to 8.0 were the same old
story. Very light on details and 7 of the 8 steps seemed to be "hire an
Epicor consultant". What exactly would "schedule resource for
installation" mean other than hire them to install it? Actually the push
to use consulting was toned down a bit but from what I was hearing from
people doing it on your own is still like a journey in the dark - you're
on your own. My biggest gripe was that there was not a session for step
by step guidance on installing 8.0 on a test server (see #2 above).

4. There was a lot of verbal confusion about Crystal Xi (special Epicor
version) and XI (as in roman numeral 11) which would be Crystal 11. I
might be wrong but my impression was 8.0 uses Crystal 10 (not 11) and
that Xi is 10 with adaptations (and pricing) for Vantage 8.0. Still I
heard many people talking about Crystal 11 too - was it just me or were
they too confused? I never did see a session on what exactly Crystal Xi
is (see #2 above).

5. Another bit of confusion (maybe just me) was about the difference in
how the workstation interacts with the server. My gut feeling (all I
have because this was not explained well anywhere) is that all the
visible stuff is generated on the workstation saving bandwidth for the
data that fills in the blanks -AND- that all the selected data
(sometimes how much is up to the user) is shoveled off to the
workstation for processing then transactions for updates are sent back
to the DB. Thus, if you do as in 6.1 and earlier and "select all" you
are going to severely impact performance. I'm not sure if I am right
about this because there was no good explanation of the interaction
between workstation and server (see #2 above).

6. I was hugely impressed (and a little frightened) by the depth to
which the UI can be customized - in particular what a person skilled in
VB.net can do. A really nice feature...saving multiple customizations
and allowing them to be "exported". The Yahoo Group is going to need a
much larger upload area.

7. The general sessions were OK for getting background info on Epicor
and "the state of the company" - which I like to monitor so I know they
will be around for awhile - but at least this year they were much
shorter. There was some mention in the Vantage/Vista general session
about a roadmap of future versions (like 8.05) but these were really
light on content and specific changes between versions.

8. The food lines at lunch were really long - way too long. When 20
sessions let out all at once it does not make a lot of sense to keep
half the lines closed waiting for people to come later while 50 or more
people are queued up at the few serving lines that are open. On top of
which the few that are open end up depleted and people are waiting for
restocking making the lines that much longer while perfectly good food
is waiting in the closed lines. My gripe here is that I wanted to get
in, eat, talk with tablemates, get out and visit hall of solutions and
vendor pavilion area (one in the same) before the afternoon sessions
started.

9. It was really nice they had the PCs for checking email outside the
exhibit area and available for longer hours. But there were only 10 and
the lines were long. Not sure if this was demand related or if it was
because those using them seemed to tie them up a long time (mostly while
trying to type while also on cell phones). Perhaps they need a sign
encouraging speed if people are waiting....or those timers they use for
chess matches.

Cliff, for your specific questions on T1 links and document linking for
Part file info (within Job and Part tracker) I was not able to find info
on but my sense from other conversations there as well as info here on
the board is that 10 users at the other end of a T1 will not be a big
problem and if the document linking is not there as promised then
customization will be able to do the trick. So I don't see any show
stoppers in 8.0 for these issues.

All in all it was still a very worthwhile conference even if I came away
with more questions than I left with. I did gain a lot of insight into
customization potential and how this will impact my investigation for
upgrading. The result of the 8.0 info I obtained (and from comments on
this group) is that we are delaying our upgrade investigation by a few
more months and won't attempt a test server to play around with 8.0
until after the start of 2006. This would push a "go live" date into
mid-2007 for us. So....I will have one more Perspectives for them to
address the "mechanics" questions ( see #2 above ;) ) if I still have
them then.

I did not attend the party Tuesday night (again). It is really hard to
justify $75 for my wife to attend with me. We decided early on that for
us that $75 was better spent checking out the Star Trek Experience at
the LV Hilton (now a short monorail ride from the Flamingo). My 2
cents....it was worth it once (barely) if you are a trekkie and can
devote the time to read all of the displays and look at the exhibits but
the two shows alone are not worth the full price. They also need to
update the whole experience - especially place the ship consoles with
LCD screens and "real" interactive screens tied into the "story". Now
that we've been there and done that....once was OK but I would not do it
again for that price.

Question for other attendees who had spouse/guest attend with them and
got the full meal/party guest pass.....did they have tables at lunch
designated for "guests" so spouses would not have to sit and listen to
discussion of manufacturing and computers? My wife's biggest worry
about the guest package was having to endure boring computer talk at
lunch.

-Todd C.

I thought the conference was good. A lot like last year except I
wasn't sick this year so I felt like chatting a little more. I agree
that the service was terrible and I don't think the food was as good
as in the past.

There are lots of interesting possibilities with V8. I can't wait to
get my hands on it, but unfortunately it looks like I'll have to wait
a while for the hardware to be purchased.

Todd C. regarding your comment about Crystal XI. I did attend a
session on reporting options by Kevin Rossell where he mentioned that
Crystal 10 is the current version they are using with V8, but that
they are working out an agreement to make Crystal XI the new
standard. He thought that would be done within a couple of months.
He also mentioned he thought that once the agreement is done there
would be a patch or something that would make XI the standard.

Thanks Brian for the Crystal info. That's the heart of my confusion....in the slides on the CD from Perspectives Crystal X-eye is listed as Xi (small case i ) whereas if you look at Crystal's (aka Business Object's) web site version XI, which came after version 10, looks like roman numerals for eleven. So I guess the Epicor X-i version will really be a special version of 11 (XI) with a small "i" after it to indicate "integrated" or something.

My main concern is that sometime between now and when I start rewriting several hundred RB reports I will need to decide whether to get the Epicor version or spend more for the full version and if that version will be compatible with Vantage 8.0 runtime DLLs based on X-i. I suppose time will tell as they get their deal worked out with BO.
