Instant Messaging

This sounds sweet.

Where can I find it? What's its marketed name? Costs?

Thanks.

No CTO is a third party application that runs at each workstation and uses a
series of mouse clicks to close a Vantage session like the macro programs
AutoIT and GroundControl. The result is that the idle times can be set
different or even disabled per each user ID. There are no error messages
left on the workstation as a result to the closing of Vantage like the
Progress version leaves. The Manager application of CTO can be run at your
desk and allows you to see all Vantage, Data Collection & Progress licenses
in use. This utility can then poll (IM/chat) with the application running
at the workstation and have it report its status. You also have to ability
to send a close command to the workstation and have the program at the
workstation trigger early and shut down the session. I applied the same
function to the CTO_SMon program which runs on the server and monitors the
LG file of the database to notify you of unusual entries as a early warning
of possible database corruption. The CTO_LMgr can talk to CTO_SMon in the
same way and tell it to run the Progress Promon kill a session on the
server. (beats having to walk to the computer room to kill a locked
session.)

Does this help explain it further?

Is the ClientTimeOut the feature in the registry of the server that stops a
vantage session after a timeout period? If it is, then I know what you
mean. We discussed this at length some time ago on these boards.

But it seems you are doing something different with regard to ending an idle
session. Can you please explain further?

Thanks.

I kind of do a workstation to workstation. I setup my shop workstations to
IM/chat to my workstation what their status is every 15 minutes. I then
have a program at my desk that monitors these transmissions. If my program
fails to hear from a specific workstation within a hour, I'm notified with a
flag that there is a possible problem with that computer (lockup, turned
off, unplugged, exited program, etc.) and I can react to it. I now have
about a 99% uptime with the shop pcs now vs the old system which relied on
word of mouth from someone in the shop to tell me there is a problem which
could go weeks before someone ever mentions the problem. It's not an
official IM program like AIM, MSN, Y!, but it uses the same technique to
communicate as these programs do.

I also use this technique with ClientTimeOut to ask a workstation how long
Vantage has been idle there, and if so choose, tell it to shut down Vantage
at that workstation. Works just as well talking to the Vantage server and
controlling Promon from my desk to kill Progress sessions.

If Epicor were smart, they would implement this method into the Vantage
alarms/global alerts in addition to just the e-mails.

I do run trillian on my desktop at work in case someone (like my wife) needs
to reach me immediately in an emergency.

It's a powerful tool, but can very easily be used in non-productive ways
just like web surfing. So think twice about how you would implement it.
You don't want your people spending their time typing non-productive
chit-chat all day long.

All,

Has anyone incorporated Instant Messaging into their business processes such
as (Sales to Shipping) or (Yourself to a Vendor) as a channel of
communication? I keep reading about it but don't see it at all in our market

Hi Group

We use instant messanging (internally) throughout our business to
compliment e-mail. It comes as part of Microsoft Exchange 2000. We do
not use instant messanging with MSN (externally) due to security
reasons.
