Subject: RE: [Vantage] Jobs for machine maintenance
After some trial and error, we came up with the following strategy:
For each machine, there is a maintenance manual detailing all the different
procedures. There is also an outline of all of these (for our AS 9100/ISO
9001 QMS). On each machine is a checklist of daily, weekly, monthly, 3- 6-
and 12- month activities. Finally, each machine has a Job Traveler detailing
all the maintenance operations.
Daily maintenance (mostly checking settings & fluid levels) is just done on
the checklist, not the traveler.
All other operations are on the traveler with the start/end date set to the
day on which the maintenance is to be done. The text of the operations
refers to the correct work instruction (and revision). The estimated time on
the operation allows for downtime on the machine's schedule. (This shows up
on our modified Priority Dispatch report, showing the machine as occupied).
Another report shows maintenance to be done (a Priority Dispatch just for
maintenance).
The real trick: Getting the dates on the travelers correct. To do this, I
had an operation Maintenace, on a work center called Wait Time. It has a
capacity of 1 hour a day, 7 days a week. I put an operation between each
weekly operation, and set the estimated time to 7 hours. When scheduled, the
operations spread out as desired. A little tweaking for holidays and it's
done. The last step is to delete all the wait time operations and release
the job.
I have several formats in the Part Master (Methods of Manufacturing) to
create these job travelers quickly, but it still takes some time (there are
34 of them!).
One limitation: If a maintenance operation is performed late, the remaining
operations do not shift in time. For example, if weekly maintenance is due
on Mondays and one machine is not done until Friday, it will be due again
just 3 days later.
That's about it. It's not pretty, but it works.

Subject: [Vantage] Jobs for machine maintenance
Someone had posted how they made jobs for doing machine maintenance a
couple of months ago and I thought it was a great idea and gave it to
our Manager. He nows wants to do it but can't find his copy. Does
any one have this or can the person that posted it please send me a
copy. Thank you (I tried looking at the messages on one list but
couldn't find it.)
