Jobs on hold

Marilyn,

Epicor sure should look at this as a needed product improvement as jobs
being placed unfortunately is an essential part of all businesses.

We do this method that Todd has suggested only using 2050. We
change the sales order to that date also and then we can monitor jobs on
hold using the scheduled shipment in shop vision. It works well for us
but it seems that maybe this should be an enhancement for Epicor.
Provide a Job on Hold flag that would come up should anyone attempt to

Steve,

Alternate method ... Have you considered simply changing the due
date of the parent order to 12/31/2020 and then back scheduling all
component jobs ?
With the msg to the shop not to work on any jobs that have due
dates > 2010
...

Todd,
Good suggestion, but it would be difficult for us. We have come
complicated assemblies and subassemblies. One job has more than 20

Then move it to the new operation / work center.
The advantage here is that you can always run a dispatch report

much money is
involved.
To "Release" such a job simply move it back to the original
operation / work
center.
FYI, our normal procedure is to also physically move the job to
one
specified section of the shop - the "Hold" work center. This
way all jobs
on hold are in the same location and on the same report.
Also, you can have as many different "Hold" work centers as you
need.
Perhaps jobs held because of credit problems in one pile while
jobs held
because of engineering problems in another stack. What ever is
simple and
makes sense.
Don't know if this would work for you but I thought I'd toss it
out as a
suggestion.

If you UnRelease a job they come off the data collection work queue
listing. When you Unengineer a job they will come off the priority
dispatch reports. To check which jobs are unreleased or unengineered,
you can go to the Job Entry screen, hit the search button, hit the Job
Status down arrow and search by either Not Engineered or UnReleased. I
know of no report for the jobs on hold, but if someone knows of one,
please let us know. When we put a job on hold we usually unengineer the
job.

The sales order entry screen has a check box to put an order on hold
which we have not used yet. The help screen says putting an order on
hold will exclude it from certain reports, but it doesn't define which
reports. Does anyone know whether putting a sales order on hold affects
the job that is linked to the sales order?

No flag except on the sales order. We just unengineer the job and we
always keep an eye on unengineered and unreleased jobs. In one case a
person in the shop that had security reengineered a job, thinking that

We unengineered and unreleased the job, but we also the problem before of someone thought we made a correction and forgot to re-engineer the job. So what we did was under schedule priority we made on the says ON HOLD, we also made our on bitmap that stands out for the
others that says HOLD.

I hope this helps.

We use the un-engineered/un released method. The date of 2020/2050 would
work also but then your job stays on the schedule board, granted at the
bottom of the board, but if you do this with any number of jobs your
scheduler will end up with page after page of visual schedule. I happen to
like a "cleaner" schedule and would like to look at only jobs that are
actually in production. Besides that, if the job stays released with a 2020
date someone can possibly clock time against it. It is just known around
here that if a job is un-released/unengineered and you want to do something
with it or have a question, call Lisa. I DO think that an enhancement of an
ON HOLD flag would be a big help, that and a memo on the job would explain a
lot.

We do this method that Todd has suggested only using 2050. We change the
sales order to that date also and then we can monitor jobs on hold using the
scheduled shipment in shop vision. It works well for us but it seems that
maybe this should be an enhancement for Epicor. Provide a Job on Hold flag
that would come up should anyone attempt to clock on.

Steve,

Alternate method ... Have you considered simply changing the due date of the
parent order to 12/31/2020 and then back scheduling all component jobs ?

With the msg to the shop not to work on any jobs that have due dates > 2010

Todd,

Good suggestion, but it would be difficult for us. We have come
complicated assemblies and subassemblies. One job has more than 20
travelers in the shop. For that job we would have to add over 20
operations to the hold work center.

Venky,

What we normally do is add an operation - if it is at oper 20 we
will create
an operation 21.

On operation 21 we specify a WC such as "Jobs on Hold".

Then move it to the new operation / work center.

The advantage here is that you can always run a dispatch report
for the "On
Hold" work center and see what is being held and via wip - how
much money is

Don't know if this would work for you but I thought I'd toss it
out as a
suggestion.

How does one put jobs that have some labor transcation posted on

there any report that one can print that will list all jobs on

Todd,

That could work, but you loose the scheduling. We, like most Vantage
users, do not use finite scheduling. But we do a lot of pull and drop
scheduling to work around capacity problems. We would loose the
scheduling function.
Todd,

I think that closing a job may be good for some of us as the job won't
come up on the work queue or priority dispatch. When you reopen the
job, the schedule remains as it was, the same as it does when you
un-engineer, then re-engineer a job.

For us, even if we have to reschedule the job due to a long hold, it is
easier to pull and drop from a schedule layout that we can see on the
job scheduling board where the operation relationships are appearing
before you.

Dina,

Thanks for the suggestion, we'll try it. Everything we can do to
prevent problems, especially on jobs that could be canceled and we
and/or our customer would only loose money.

We unengineered and unreleased the job, but we also the problem
before of someone thought we made a correction and forgot to re-engineer
the job. So what we did was under schedule priority we made on the says
ON HOLD, we also made our on bitmap that stands out for the others that
says HOLD.
I hope this helps.
