Another thing to consider....If you change your Vantage server, you will
need to
clear out the registry for the old vantage server. I changed servers
and shut down the old
server and had massive user complaints about Vantage performance.
Epicor sent me a document
with instructions where I had to hack the registry to get rid of all of
the old server entries.
It was taking at least 5 minutes to log in, and the trackers were
practically useless before
I cleared the registry.

Hello -

I need the help of the group again - I know this has been discussed several
time prior to this but I can't find the emails. (sorry)

I have one employee that it takes about 15 minutes to log into Vantage. The
log in screen comes up within a few seconds then it takes 15 minutes to
actually get into Vantage. It just started this week. Nothing has
changed on my network - or on his PC. Any idea's where I can start.

We are running 5.2

Really wild guess but one of the 1st things I would check would be for "ghost" sessions in Promon for the user. Perhaps something in a dangling session is locking things up for login. Next might be to uninstall Progress client and re-install Vantage/Progress. Sometimes files get corrupted or clobbered by other software installs. Most of the other slow start problems are pre-login screen (like anti-virus scanning not excluding Vantage mapped drive).

I would check any antivirus software. Sometimes when I do an update, I have to reset the option not to check network drives.

The more I think about this the more I think uninstalling the client and reinstalling might help. I have noticed that when we have had a power outage with a lot of "ghost" sessions and people get license limit messages this occurs after entering username/password. I am thinking that perhaps there is a glitch in the license checking communication to the client that it is "OK" to proceed or possibly in setitng up the session. It might be interesting to have the person log-in and then watch in Promon (refreshing often) to see if the session itself takes as long to show up as it does to get into Vantage or if the session comes up quickly but the user is still waiting to see a screen.

One thing to try before reinstall. Try a quick stop and start of the data
base. Should only take about 1 minute and could clear up a number of
issues.

The more I think about this the more I think uninstalling the client and
reinstalling might help. I have noticed that when we have had a power
outage with a lot of "ghost" sessions and people get license limit messages
this occurs after entering username/password. I am thinking that perhaps
there is a glitch in the license checking communication to the client that
it is "OK" to proceed or possibly in setitng up the session. It might be
interesting to have the person log-in and then watch in Promon (refreshing
often) to see if the session itself takes as long to show up as it does to
get into Vantage or if the session comes up quickly but the user is still
waiting to see a screen.

Really wild guess but one of the 1st things I would check would be for
"ghost" sessions in Promon for the user. Perhaps something in a dangling
session is locking things up for login. Next might be to uninstall Progress
client and re-install Vantage/Progress. Sometimes files get corrupted or
clobbered by other software installs. Most of the other slow start problems
are pre-login screen (like anti-virus scanning not excluding Vantage mapped
drive).

I have one employee that it takes about 15 minutes to log into Vantage. The
log in screen comes up within a few seconds then it takes 15 minutes to
actually get into Vantage. It just started this week. Nothing has
changed on my network - or on his PC. Any idea's where I can start.

Does this user have troble when using another PC. THat will tell you
whether it's in the PC or the sever.
Also if it's the PC try emptying the vntgwk?? directory.

Personally, and maybe it is just my site's complications, I would much rather uninstall and reinstall one client than kick everyone out of Vantage, down the DB and then have to walk all ove the plant restarting the shop floor PCs - a 30 minute process. Doing a client takes less than five minutes and affects only them - and that 5 min. is a lot less than they are wating for Vantage respond anyway. If that does not work THEN DB down/up makes a lot of sense because this really does seem like a license logging issue and clearing that table might free it up.

I would agree with you on that. In this case I think it might be a
licensing issue - after a recommendation from Russ - I tried to log in as
him from my PC and I have the same problem. So I am assuming it is a
licensing issue/server problem.

Personally, and maybe it is just my site's complications, I would much
rather uninstall and reinstall one client than kick everyone out of Vantage,
down the DB and then have to walk all ove the plant restarting the shop
floor PCs - a 30 minute process. Doing a client takes less than five
minutes and affects only them - and that 5 min. is a lot less than they are
wating for Vantage respond anyway. If that does not work THEN DB down/up
makes a lot of sense because this really does seem like a license logging
issue and clearing that table might free it up.

The more I think about this the more I think uninstalling the client and
reinstalling might help. I have noticed that when we have had a power
outage with a lot of "ghost" sessions and people get license limit messages
this occurs after entering username/password. I am thinking that perhaps
there is a glitch in the license checking communication to the client that
it is "OK" to proceed or possibly in setitng up the session. It might be
interesting to have the person log-in and then watch in Promon (refreshing
often) to see if the session itself takes as long to show up as it does to
get into Vantage or if the session comes up quickly but the user is still
waiting to see a screen.

Really wild guess but one of the 1st things I would check would be for
"ghost" sessions in Promon for the user. Perhaps something in a dangling
session is locking things up for login. Next might be to uninstall Progress
client and re-install Vantage/Progress. Sometimes files get corrupted or
clobbered by other software installs. Most of the other slow start problems
are pre-login screen (like anti-virus scanning not excluding Vantage mapped
drive).

Sounds like classic symptoms of anti-virus software interfering with
Vantage. Try disabling the "auto protect" or whatever your package calls
it. If that fixes it, add the Vantage mapped drive letter to the
software's exclusion list.

Instead of reinstalling, did you try reregistering the OCXs? Go to your Vantage directory. There is a folder called OCX. There is an Executable called InstOCX. Run this. This basically resets a defunct installation. I've used it a few times, and has solved similiar issues.

One thing to try before reinstall. Try a quick stop and start of the data

The more I think about this the more I think uninstalling the client and
reinstalling might help. I have noticed that when we have had a power
outage with a lot of "ghost" sessions and people get license limit messages
this occurs after entering username/password. I am thinking that perhaps
there is a glitch in the license checking communication to the client that
it is "OK" to proceed or possibly in setitng up the session. It might be
interesting to have the person log-in and then watch in Promon (refreshing
often) to see if the session itself takes as long to show up as it does to
get into Vantage or if the session comes up quickly but the user is still
waiting to see a screen.

Really wild guess but one of the 1st things I would check would be for
"ghost" sessions in Promon for the user. Perhaps something in a dangling
session is locking things up for login. Next might be to uninstall Progress
client and re-install Vantage/Progress. Sometimes files get corrupted or
clobbered by other software installs. Most of the other slow start problems
are pre-login screen (like anti-virus scanning not excluding Vantage mapped
drive).

Another thing to consider....If you change your Vantage server, you will
need to
clear out the registry for the old vantage server. I changed servers
and shut down the old
server and had massive user complaints about Vantage performance.
Epicor sent me a document
with instructions where I had to hack the registry to get rid of all of
the old server entries.
It was taking at least 5 minutes to log in, and the trackers were
practically useless before
I cleared the registry.

I had the same problem on one workstation. Dell Optiplex GX200. I ended up
turning off the onboard network card and installing a new Linksys PCI card.
After this everything was fine. Also, check all the network settings and
like Wayne said, exclude the Vantage mapped drive, the local vantage work
folder from Virus Scans.
