Long login time

It should be in your INI file by default. Normally on the 11th line. This
does not stop the Vantage Splash screen from popping up. It just disables the
Progress Splash screen.

We have recently upgraded to v6.10 and it seem like it takes a LONG
time to get to the sign on screen after double clickinig the Vantage
icon. I am new to Vantage, although I have learned a lot in the past
month.

I would appreacite any advice on "tweaking" my system.

Thanks
Jeff
Shut your antivirus OFF and try it as a test. Make sure you kill it on both
your server and your client.

I have found that 1 second of logon time at the server is good, five seconds
on a 1GB connection is good and 10-14 sec on a normal XP box running 100MB is
good.

If that doesn't work, let me know. I have some more things to check.
Thanks
Jeremy

Did you change server names? That is one other thing that can really slow
down the Vantage launch. Pick a client that is running slow. Do a search in
the registry for the old server name and see if you find it.

I found that this, after the antivirus, is the thing that will slow down a
server a lot.

Also references to the old Vantage installs could be throwing it off. For
example, if your old Vantage software was installed at v:\epicor\vantage\ and
your new install is at v:\mfgsys\ then the client machine may be trying to load
active X controls from a location on the server that no longer exists.

HTH,
Jeremy

Jeff,
Also look in your network TCP settings, make sure the IP address
for your DNS server is entered.

We had this problem. We traced part of it to Norton Antivirus. And had to go into the
configuration screen for NAV and not scan files sourced from the V: drive (vantage). This
helped quite a bit.

Jeremy,

Thanks for the info. I have changed servers and I checked the anti-
virus. The anti-virus is not scanning V: and I scanned the registry
for all references for the old server (That took a while!). It seems
to be faster. I am going to try it on a couple of other pc's to see
if it makes a difference to other users here.

FWIW....I have the same issue here only on selected PCs. All are configured to not scan Vantage mapped drives, etc... The really crazy thing (and I have measured it repeatedly) is that the login screen will not appear until exactly when the splash screen disappears. Like they are linked somehow. Not on every PC either but probably 1 out of 3 (including mine). RB comes up immediately - over the top of the splash screen.

I thought the splash screen was set for 30 seconds but I can no longer find where this is set to try 15 seconds. In the mfgsys.ini file I have the following startup section:
[Startup]
V6Display=no
;ImmediateDisplay=yes
;MultitaskingInterval=100
DLC=V:\PROGRESS
Use-3D-Size=No
PROBUILD=V:\PROGRESS\Probuild
PROPATH=.,M:\mfgsys61
PrinterFont=Courier New,Size=12
AllowDesignMode=no
nosplash=yes

Anyone know what "ImmediateDisplay" is and why it would be commented out?
Also, why "nosplash=yes" and yet the splash screens do come up?
Perhaps I am looking in the wrong place.

Thanks,
-Todd C.

I have used this also. Hard to believe but most of my xp pro machines were
15 - 20 sec to login screen. If you click on the splash screen as soon as
it appears it is 10-11 seconds.

Silly works for me. WOW!
A) I did not know you could click on it
B) Login screen came up in 12 seconds versus 30 when waiting for splash to go away

I also replaced the splash screen and background gif and bmp files with empty
files. When the splash screen comes up, its all white. The background for
Vantage that shows the guy working on something is also all white. This will
speed things up. Even more so on a Terminal Server.

FWIW....I have the same issue here only on selected PCs. All are configured
to not scan Vantage mapped drives, etc... The really crazy thing (and I
have measured it repeatedly) is that the login screen will not appear until
exactly when the splash screen disappears. Like they are linked somehow.
Not on every PC either but probably 1 out of 3 (including mine). RB comes
up immediately - over the top of the splash screen.

I thought the splash screen was set for 30 seconds but I can no longer find
where this is set to try 15 seconds. In the mfgsys.ini file I have the
following startup section:
[Startup]
V6Display=no
;ImmediateDisplay=yes
;MultitaskingInterval=100
DLC=V:\PROGRESS
Use-3D-Size=No
PROBUILD=V:\PROGRESS\Probuild
PROPATH=.,M:\mfgsys61
PrinterFont=Courier New,Size=12
AllowDesignMode=no
nosplash=yes

Anyone know what "ImmediateDisplay" is and why it would be commented out?
Also, why "nosplash=yes" and yet the splash screens do come up?
Perhaps I am looking in the wrong place.

Thanks,
-Todd C.

Thanks to all who replied! I appreciate it

Make sure your vantage temp (working directory) is set to a local
folder, also add to the AD's Netlogon script a line "DEL
c:\vntgwork\*.* /f /q" to clear your working directory at every logon,
works like a carm to for me :D

IF you're running a Terminal Server just modify the path to a local
path for that server. So the beginning of my logon script looks like this:

copy \\pripdc\netlogon\ifmember.exe c:\winnt
DEL c:\vntgwork\*.* /f /q
DEL m:\vntgwork\*.* /f /q
DEL m:\vntgwork1\*.* /f /q

where "m" is the citrix local drive. Why two working DIR's ?? well
sometimes two people work on the same thing at the same time, and
since the're doing it on the same computer it causes conflict with the
temp files, so I go to a station and manually swap the temp dir,
and have one of them relog and everything goes back to normal :D

Tom
Frank,
Just in case you are still needing to know. Once you double click (or if
you have it in the quick launch tray single click) the Vantage Icon to get
it started the splash screen will flash on the screen. As soon as it is
visible, click on it once like it was one big icon. The splash will
disappear and the login time will be reduced.
I have been thinking of seeing if I can create an AutoIT script to do this,
but for now I just let people know to do it manually. I started trying this
after I noticed that the login screen never showed up until the splash was
gone, unlike report builder. Then I started timing (nothing official like a
watch) just counting. When I noticed the reduced time for just clicking the
splash I passed the word around. Sorry I did not pass it on to the group
earlier, we just have not had a thread about login time in a while. :)
Good luck to all,
Aaron Hoyt

Hi,

I'm on 6.1, release 518. I did some experimenting running the
V:\mfgsys61\bitmap\vnspash.gif and vnsplash.bmp files locally, and the
final test was to run none of them.

i.e. locate your vnspash.gif and vnsplash.bmp files. Rename both of
them to vnsplash_orig.gif and vnsplash_orig.bmp. It shaves the 5-10
seconds off the login time.

Take care,

Steve

I thought the splash screen was set for 30 seconds but I can no longer
find
where this is set to try 15 seconds. In the mfgsys.ini file I have the
following startup section:
[Startup]
V6Display=no
;ImmediateDisplay=yes
;MultitaskingInterval=100
DLC=V:\PROGRESS
Use-3D-Size=No
PROBUILD=V:\PROGRESS\Probuild
PROPATH=.,M:\mfgsys61
PrinterFont=Courier New,Size=12
AllowDesignMode=no
nosplash=yes

Anyone know what "ImmediateDisplay" is and why it would be commented
out?
Also, why "nosplash=yes" and yet the splash screens do come up?
Perhaps I am looking in the wrong place.

Thanks,
-Todd C.

Thanks to all who replied! I appreciate it
Jeff
