Logging into Vantage

We noticed this exact thing (excluding the server from scan) when we moved
to Norton Corporate edition. Because it knows the server is handled the
client setup excludes the server from scans. Every PC upgraded form
standalone to corporate version experiences a dramatic reduction in Vantage
start time.

In the same vein I have noticed an even larger impact on clients still
running old AS/400 terminal emulation (30 days and counting 'till Classic is
gone, hooray!). Programs like PCTwin make all of Vantage run extremely slow
(over 1 min to display a job in job tracker) and 5 min or more to login.
Very strange.

Paul,

Check your settings on Norton. Typically the issue is that your anti-virus
software is scanning the files coming FROM your server. In our case we run
an anti-virus program on our servers to keep them clean therefore I consider
them a "Safe" source of input to the clients. So on the client PC's I
normally set the anti-virus software to scan the local hard drives, floppy
drives, and cd-roms. Email is scanned by our email server and our client
PC's. Exclude your network drives from the scan.

This cut our startup time in half while still providing protection against
viruses.

We have Norton Antivirus running on our PC's and it takes about 50 seconds
to get to the log in screen once you've clicked on the Vantage Icon. I've
disable Norton and can then get to the log in screen in about 25 seconds.

Does anyone know how to avoid having Norton review Vantage files after the
icon has been hit, so I can keep Norton enabled but not have to wait the
extra 25 second?
This is important as we are using the client time out so people need to log
in more frequently.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Try setting up Norton to skip the .vtg file extensions I know this can be
done in Inoculate but I'm not sure about Norton.

Another option (depending on the level of anti-virus protection you want):

1. Set Norton up so it only scans files when modified (anything that will
save to the computer).

2. Go into the Heuristics and turn the "Bloodhound virus detection
technology" off. The bloodhound technology attempts to search for and
locate new viruses in files.

With Norton configured this way, Vantage loads in the same amount of time
for us as if Norton were disabled. I have scheduled virus scans nightly on
my servers, so the only files I'm really concerned about are the new ones
being written to the machine. These settings take care of that. As for the
bloodhound technology, I'd wager that Norton will catch the new viruses
before me 99% of the time. For the amount bloodhound slows down my systems,
it's just not worth it to me.

short of repeating myself...
by excluding c:\vntgwork from Norton's Real-time File Protection
(located under Scan Options) Norton will then skip regocx, etc... as they're
created in the vantage client working directory (c:\vntgwork).
