We looked at numerous ERP/MRP packages.

And have been running Vantage for 3 years.
We are very pleased with it.
Yes, there are quirks, a few odd things but mostly we like the flexibility and stability.
We have customized the VBforms and even use vantage to track our plant/machine maintenance.

As mentioned before Report Builder is very quick and easy. We have bazillion reports in it and I hope to retire before we are required to switch totally to Crystal.
We use Crystal for all documents which go to customers or vendors. We have customized these with our logo, web address, etc.
Crystal does make a good presentation but it is more cumbersome then RB.

We also , have CorVu and are increasingly using it for quick data extraction which we previously used RB for.
The future looks very bright for this add on.

There is one MAJOR caution.
Get GOOD Advice on the set-up.
Vantage uses 'clever' ways to direct transactions to the General Ledger, like:
Classes, Groups, Departments, etc.
We needed guidance for this.

Jeff Pagano is excellent to assure a sound accounting base is set.

That's all

I apologize in advance if the following question is out of the scope
of this group. I am the Controller at a company that is currently in
the middle of a software search to replace our current
manufacturing/accounting package. We are currently using MAX from
Exact software for ERP and Great Plains from Microsoft for
accounting. After doing some initial research, we elected to see
software demos for Vantage, Syteline from MAAPICS, and Lilly from
Visual. At this point, we have narrowed it down to Vantage or
Syteline, pending additional research and reference checks. The
problem of course with references is the vendor isn't going to give
me someone who isn't happy with their software. I participate in a
Yahoo group for my current software, and have found the group to be
an invaluable resource for me. So my question to this group: if you
were going to purchase software today, would you purchase Vantage?
This is a considerable investment for us, and I appreciate any
comments you would like to throw our way. I've seen the product and
we are visiting a current customer today, but I would love to hear
about the things Vantage doesn't handle well. In a sense, so no
software package will fit us perfectly, I almost feel like you
sometimes pick the lesser of the evils, and I would therefore love to
hear what the evils of Vantage are. I would especially be interested
in knowing how you feel the system tracks the inventory through WIP
(is it possible to know what stage the parts are in at the click of a
button), how well you think the base scheduler works and how easy is
it to use, and if the system has the capabilities to track for
changes in orders (regardless of whether it is a customer order, shop
order, or purchase order to a vendor). From an accounting
standpoint, I am also interested in your opinion regarding how easy
or difficult it is to do costing analysis and close out the month-
end. Please feel free to respond directly to me at the above email
address. Thank you in advance for any advice you can give. I know
everyone is busy, so I appreciate the help.

I'm not a huge Vantage fan but I think it does all that you have mentioned very well. I'm in IT so I am more interested in the "NERDY" aspects of it. Database, front end, ect... As for Syteline, one of our sister companies purchased it two years ago and their IT Manager told me that they think its all but worthless. Have you Checked out Made2Manage? I hear lot of good things about that product as well as Navision. Then again, I have also heard that Great Plains eManufacturing package is supposed to rock.

Hope that helps.

As for Progress vs. SQL. I would take SQL any day but Vantage works best on Progress. Not sure how many people us the SQL version but I hear more cons about that then pros.

Thank you for the reply. We heard very good things about Made2Manage, but
the fact that about 6 months or so after they were acquired by another
company, their top executives were all fired scared us off a little bit. We
heard good things about the Great Plains package and that would have been
great since we already have the accounting package, but there were some key
things that it didn't do for us. In fact, after the reseller visited us,
they were actually the ones that pulled out a little and were honest about
the fact that they didn't really fit, which I had enormous respect for them
doing that. Since you mentioned you were in IT, what is your opinion about
Progress vs SQL? I am NOT an IT person, but am interested in your thoughts

DO NOT use SQL Server with Vantage. We went that route a few years ago and it was a disaster. This has nothing to do with SQL Server. Its the way Vantage was written. If you go with Vantage then use Progress. I prefer SQL Server over Progress but there are others on this list that would disagree. I would not care what database it used if the ODBC worked as it should. There are a few issues, such as accessing a memo field with ODBC that is a real pain. The Merant (Progress) ODBC driver can not access anything over 3000 characters long. The query will bomb out. The ODBC Driver is also very slow compaired to the ODBC Drivers I am used to working with. On a positive note, Progress is cheep and reliable. It is also very fast when used with 4GL.

Made2Manage is based here in Indianapolis and I have heard the new company is dumping tons of cash into it. They also seem to be taking good care of the employees.

Hope that helps,
Jeremy

We thought about using a wireless laptop but we wanted a device that can scan barcodes and do issuing to jobs, transferring material from one warehouse to another and receiving material. This would eliminate a great deal of wasted time for us. We might end up using a wireless laptop but I'm a little weary about giving our shop personnel that type of access. We want to make it simple for them.

I think the reality is with any package, unless it is custom for you and
yours NO "boxed lunch" package will be a perfect fit. Keep in mind all of
these things are an average of opinions from both developers and users. The
issues that come up then are. "But WE don't do it that way, change the
software". The reality is with any package is some flexibility OUTSIDE the
software. Vantage is a stable platform, I have been impacted by relatively
FEW technical glitches, (fewer than windows operating systems), in the past
year I have had to call tech support a total of twice. I hate the support
fee's , but "duh!" I'd hate them with another package too. This user group
is a great big GIANT plus. I like Vantage mainly because MOST of my users
like it, they don't understand it, but they're used to it. I personally
like Vantage because it performs as advertised, mostly. Would I buy it
again, probably.

I'm not a huge Vantage fan but I think it does all that you have mentioned
very well. I'm in IT so I am more interested in the "NERDY" aspects of it.
Database, front end, ect... As for Syteline, one of our sister companies
purchased it two years ago and their IT Manager told me that they think its
all but worthless. Have you Checked out Made2Manage? I hear lot of good
things about that product as well as Navision. Then again, I have also
heard that Great Plains eManufacturing package is supposed to rock.

Hope that helps.

I know

Vantage is my 4th MRP/ERP system at various companies and by far the best I have ever used. Unfortunately one of the biggest advantages is going away with Vantahe 7.0 (Sonoma). This is Report Builder which makes it insanely easy to quickly write reports and drag usable knowledge out of the database. Crystal Reports is a decent alternative - much more powerful but also more complicated and less "rapid". As for tracking the status of a part the using Part Advisor and linking to Job Tracker is a couple key strokes and puts you right there...assuming you are using Data Collection from the shop floor. I ended up writing a WIP report for open jobs (using Report Builder) that not only shows costs into a job but projects remaining costs to forecast if the job will make or lose money - often in time to correct issues and turn losers into winners. I like Progress a lot mainly because I don't have to do much with it. It just runs and runs with little Admin overhead. Be sure to closely look at the Sonoma release and get a detailed demo of it because it is very different from Vantage 6.1 (or current competitor products) and will bring a lot of interesting capabilities. As for customizing - I agree, avoid at all cost. Besides the provided VB Form fields and user defined fields are all we have ever needed to tweak things for this location. If you would like to call me please contact your Vantage sales rep to get ahold of me.

Michele:
Our company went from Symix (Syteline's previous version) to Vantage. What I can tell you is that for the most part we've been happy with
Vantage. There are some things that Symix did better related to MPS scheduling and production/purchasing order requirements. We've heard that the Sonoma release has big improvements in that area. Syteline's shortcomings were in job costing/efficiencies. When we looked to upgrade to Syteline, we also were concerned that the users would be intimated by it. Vantage is alot more user friendly. Also, as Shirley said - this user
group is invaluable. The trackers are fantastic - that's what does as Patrick mentioned - finding the information you are looking for quickly. There is no comparison with Tech Support to what we had available with Symix (maybe it's changed with Syteline), but I'm very happy with Epicor's Tech Support. And as for me - I love Progress. Symix was Progress also and it is very reliable and stable.
Hope that helps!

One beef with the accounting aspect is something we discovered a short time
ago. At least on Vantage 5.2, when customer information (ex. billing
address) is changed, the info changes even on POSTED invoices. Could be
nothing for you but creates problems for us.
Some of our customers require invoices be sent to different locations
depending on what type of work was done. You can only have one billing
address at a time and that is displayed on all the invoices. There is no
easy way to determine which invoice address was used at the time of posting.

As to Progress vs. SQL, I have never heard people rave about a SQL
implementation. Progress appears to be the standard choice.

That "Feature" goes all the way back to 2.7 . Those customers with multiple
BILL TO's get a customer entry for each "Bill To" address. The Vendor
database works the same way. So I would say if you need to retain old
address history, You need to make a new customer entry. Logically I
understand why. Even history is linked through the Customer/Vendor Number
(not ID) You aren't actually saving the addresses in invoices, po's
whatever. You are PULLING the data linked to the customer/vendor number.
Change those fields, you change your history. Kind of flies in the face of
the HISTORY IS CHISELED IN STONE philosophy.

If you do decide on Vantage and join this list be prepared for:

Rants: On every and any subject
Laughs: On anything, Everything, when you least expect it. (ever hear the
BEAR joke?)
Help: On everything
Opinions: On everything.
Respect: From everybody .... (or else)

Don't get me wrong Vantage is the topic here but some days we just get plain

We do have some issues reconciling these accounts but it generally is minor amounts... for stock and finished goods it is usually pennies which I assume are rounding differences... and wip well wip is a different story.. sometimes it is good and some times not so good... never more than a few thousand dollars. and most of it occurs due to transactions for debit memos and purchasing adjustments. Labor and burden are usually minor amounts. I do print all relevant reports the last day of the month after everyone else is out of Vantage and don't let anyone close or complete any jobs until I have ran the wip reports and that seems to help a great deal.

MAJOR problem for us with our current system due to not all transactions

package. The customer we just visited mentioned having problems reconciling
the report to the general ledger, although also said it could be related to
a timing difference. If we end up selecting Vantage and I end up still
having to spend a considerable amount of time reconciling inventory like I
do now, I know our Chairman will not be happy we spent as much money as we
are contemplating. Has anyone out there had these problems?

That's all
