Many lines make slower work

Thanks for all your feedback.

Re customization - there is none on any of the AP side of things but
plenty on quote entry (mainly display/entry fields for user defined
fields we have added). Our PO guy uses PO suggestions so 'hasn't noticed
anything significantly slower than the rest of the system'!

Our IT guy is hoping to fix me up with a dedicated pc for our test
server so I also test this out on 406 when that is up.

kind regards

Debbie Stokes

Hi all,
we are on 8.03.305L on SQL. I have had several reports of multiline
entries that suddenly get very slow after 12 -20 lines of entry. This
has been reported in quotes and intercompany ap invoices. For example,
a 28 line invoice took 30 mins to enter. Our FD is not happy.
Searching on here I noted a similar comment about PO entry. A reply
put it down to OpenEdge 10.0 performance and said it was much better
in the 400+ upgrades using OpenEdge 10.1. Has anyone else found
similar issues and, if you upgraded, were they fixed and to what
extent?

many thanks

debbie
We are on 4xx and using openEdge 10.1 and haven't found significant
improvement in speed with 20+ lines in PO and SO entry. It is still very
slow and cumbersome.

Upgrading OpenEdge and upgrading to at least .403 provides some improvement - but is not a compete panacea... It is just better.

Are your slow apps customized? If so (and it is more than cosmetic customization), consider moving true behavior mod customization (which is client based - and absolutely impacts application speed) to server based BPMs.

We have found the 8.03.405a version faster for PO Entry. I do not
believe OE version has much to do with it. There seems to be a change
to the way data is moved from client to server and back. In the
8.03.3xx versions, entire datasets were moved back and forth with all
the associated overhead. In 8.03.4xx only the current data row is moved
back and forth.

We found from the onset that Purchase Order Entry and AP Entry required an extremely powerful machine with lots of memory. We outfitted those personnel with dual core processor machines (the faster the better) and 3gb of memory. This helped them immensely.

BW hit the nail on the head with PO entry. SIGNIFICANT changes between 403 & 405 - so much so that extensive customizations we had in place on 403 to overcome dangerous bugs (supplier U/M's & conversion factors not being pulled in being the worst by far) completely failed on 405.

EpiNofication triggers on numerous (critical to our cusotmizations) fields that worked on 403 simply ceased working on 405. That leads credence to BW's contention that the application was rewritten to do much more descrete (change values only) write requests to the server (and thus trigger less EpiNotifies).

Frankly, it never occurred to me that more discrete (and thus faster) update processing was occuring. (Thanks BW!)
