MES performance in a browser

Hello! We are preparing for our Go-Live. It will finally happen at the end of December.

On our shop floor, we have multiple Intel NUC mini PCs. On these devices, we run Kinetic MES (Data Collection) in Google Chrome.

The issue is that we get poor performance. I have attached a video where you can notice the time it takes …

  1. to log in after entering the employee number;
  2. to load the Start Production Activity interface;
  3. to load the End Labor Activity interface.

I have also attached a video performing the same operations on a desktop PC on the shop floor. It uses the same network as the NUCs, the same OS, and the same browser version. The desktop PC runs faster by a lot.

These are the specifications of the NUC clients :

  • Intel® NUC Kit NUC5PPYH (CPU: Celeron N3700, RAM: 4GB, Disk: SD card 32GB 120MB/s read)
  • Google Chrome version 108.0.5359.124
  • Linux Kernel 6.1.20

These are the specifications of the Desktop PC client :

  • CPU: i5 8500T, RAM: 8GB, Disk: SSD 256GB)
  • Google Chrome version 108.0.5359.124
  • Linux Kernel 6.1.20

Is it expected to run that much slower on the NUCs?

you’re connected by wifi?
We had a lot of issue with wifi (using remoteapp), works well with eth.

Yes. The Intel NUCs (slow Kinetic forms) and the Desktop PC (fast Kinetic forms) are connected to the same Wifi network.

Wondering if the bottleneck is the CPU, the drive or anything else …

According to this knowledge article (Mobile Devices Performance issues accessing Kinetic Web), the NUCs have more than enough RAM.

You can test this by putting a higher performance laptop at the exact spot as your NUC using the WIFI. If the laptop performs admirably, then it’s the NUC hardware; if not; it maybe a wifi/network issue. We will be using Microsoft Slates, they currently appear to be running well over wifi. We are four months out of go-live.

I can now confirm this is not a wifi/network issue.

We need a Kinetic in a browser client hardware guide.

I literally had this conversation with our operations consultant awhile back and they didn’t have a firm answer for me; so, we just did a bunch of experimenting and determined we needed at least an i5 level processor with plenty of ram. I will up vote you - it’s needed. Thanks.
