Make sure that you review all the system 'defaults' that the Non-stock flag triggers.

We are a "make to order" shop. 90% of our items are non-stock. We do stock
a few parts. We have quite a few non-stock parts in inventory. Generally
these are over-runs. Sometimes we will run extra to capitalize on a setup
if we are reasonably sure the part will repeat.

Hi,
We are still working on our implementation of Vantage.
One of the questions we are trying to answer is when to use "Non-Stock Item"
in the Parts Master file.
We would like to try and come up with some simple rules that would make it
easy for a person to decide.
Here's what I think about non-stock vs. stock but I'd like hear what others
think.
(Is it really this simple?)
Stock Pro's
-- Inventory is on hand (min/max?) when you need it. Lead time not an issue
-- It's in a bin so you can find it
Stock Con's
-- You are carrying inventory and warehouse space without a demand. Costs
money.
Non-Stock Pro's
-- Not carrying inventory without demand and warehouse space, saves money
Non-Stock Cons
-- You have to wait for purchasing or manufacturing after placing an order.
If you need it RIGHT NOW, too bad.
-- May not be able to find the part, no bin location.
Also, any of you carry non-stock items in stock?
Can you give an example?
We have some parts that we'd like to carry service department stock.
We don't want manufacturing using this stock in their assemblies.
Can this be accomplished with non-stock?
Thanks,
Bruce Ordway
