ODBC Setup Instructions

Yes, there is ODBC with 8.

I got instructions from Support today and am working
through them.

You can download the kit from the Epicor website. Your database may need
some prepping first. If so, you will need their files. Its a good document.

I would be happy to but epicor tends to frown on that. Its a good way to get
a nasty-gram from their attorneys.

I looked on the download site and didn't see it for 8.0. Call support and
they will email it to you or look on their FTP site.

What you link to Access are dbf files, excel files, ascii
files or other access db tables
not the actual Progress tables. Although you can dump an
entire table into a dbf file
and link that to your access db.

Using ODBC, you can connect directly to the DB from any ODBC application.
I have used it for label programs, access, crystal, excel...whatever.
Be careful in setting up the ODBC. In truth you can use it to write
directly to the DB, but if you bypass triggers you corrupt your DB, so
writing is for only extreme cases.

Once you get ODBC set-up, you can use access to 'link' to the progress
tables through the ODBC connect

'File' -> 'Get External Data' -> 'Link Tables' -> 'ODBC Databases" -> then
choose your ODBC data source for vantage.

Just make sure you sufficeintly protect your data through odbc set-up and
access security so you don't accidently write to the live db which could
cause corruption...

The instructions for setting up ODBC were part ot the install guide I think,
but I am still on 5.2...

When you link your progress tables to Access, dont forget to put a check mark
in the box that says "Remember Password". I use Access/SQL Server with
Progress almost everyday.

We actually use Queries built into Excel more often than Access.

These can be automatically refreshed on open and can also incorporate "parameters" so a user
selects specified data (a customer or a product or a date range).

And you can build related calculations to the right of the query area and these will
automatically calculate once the query is updated.
