Odbc

We are experiencing problems with our ODBC set up. It appears to be running
fine on the server but when we try to set up the client installation we are
getting the two following errors. 2575 and 1890. Has anyone experienced this
problem and if so any suggestions ? all suggestions from epicor support are
not working.
Regards
Ian Chatwin
What version of Vantage, which ODBC driver are you using, at what point do you get the errors?

We are on Vantage 4 and the ODBC is Merant V3.6. We get the error messages
while trying to set up the workstation.
Passing on the description from our IT guy = start-settings-control
panel-ODBC-highlight progress-configure-test connect -ok, we then get the
error messages.

The following is from Epicor's ODBC install guide, Appendix A. I have never
personally come across these errors, however here's what their guide says
about them, it may help you out...

4. 'Error establishing Open Interface Driver connection (2575)'

A) In most cases this error is accompanied with another message: like '1403:
You have not supplied a parameter for argument -cpterm'. Try to resolve that
other message first. In this specific case removing/completing the -cpterm
line in the startup.pf file (on client/server machine) solves the problem.
Be sure that you restart the Progress Server/Broker after you edit the
startup.pf file.

9. 'Broker : Could not spawn server (1890)'

A) Check the existence of the PROOIBRK and PROOIDRV variables on the
Server-machine. They must point to the correct executables (Broker and OID).

B) Check the version of your Progress Database (must be at least 7.3B03)
C) Check the lg-files (prooidrv.lg and dcdv7.lg) for more information
The text is as follows. (MERANT)(ODBC PROGRESS driver)(PROGRESS)Broker :
Could not spawn server (1890) click OK and then
(MERANT)(ODBC PROGRESS driver)(PROGRESS)Error establishing Open Interface
Driver Connection (2575).
I hope this helps.

I am having a lot of difficulty with ODBC and Crystal Reports. I want to
take the Crystal Class but it is not until August and in Boston.

When I create a report with a join I get the following error: ODBC Error:
[Merant][ODBC PROGRESS driver] The keywords LEFT OUTER JOIN were not found
in an outer join escape sequence.

I don't even have any left outer joins in the report.

On another reports, I am getting the following error: ODBC Error:
[Merant][ODBC PROGRESS driver] [PROGRESS] Syntax error (7587)

Is anyone familiar with this error? Also, where can I go to find out what a
7587 error is.

Thanks for your help.

I was told by Crystal Decisions that generally, the last [braketed] name in an error is the place to look for help. In the case of your 7587 error, that would be PROGRESS. Here is the text of one occurrence of error 7587 on their website http://www.progress.com/services/support/cgi-bin/techweb-kbase.cgi/webkb.html?TAB=querye&verrnum=7587&vwfilters=%28none%29&kbt=_self&vmaxentries=100&btnOP.x=61&btnOP.y=12

-- Syntax Error (7587)

Solution: Check your SQL statement. If the field name contains
reserved characters ("), (_) or (-), enclose your field name
in double quotation marks ("). For example, to display all
user names and the user ID, enter this syntax into the
Procedure Editor: "SELECT _userid, _user-name
FROM _user ORDER BY _userid ASC
In Visual Basic, you must use double quotation marks ("):
"SELECT " + Chr(34) + "_userid" + Chr(34) + " FROM PUB." +
Chr(34) +"_user"+Chr(34)

There were a couple other results that came from that error in their knowledgebase that you may want to look up. see

http://www.progress.com/services/support/cgi-bin/techweb-kbase.cgi/webkb.html?TAB=querye&verrnum=7587&vwfilters=%28none%29&kbt=_self&vmaxentries=100&btnOP.x=61&btnOP.y=12

to look up error messages.

Having said all that about looking up PROGRESS errors. I would advise calling Crystal Decisions (if you have any more free support left on your 60 day limit). They can usually track down why SQL statements are being generated correctly. Usually they will advise you to start the report from scract, starting with one table and a few fields. Refresh the report. Then add another table, add a field from that table, and Refresh the report. Try doing that until you have built the report again and not when the error shows up. I have had reports that didn't work, but when I went throught he above -step-by-step- procedure, there were no errors. Apparently Crystal has trouble creating the SQL statement for Progress with complex joins at times.

It may be a place for you to start anyway.

Merant has a knowledge base that lets you search ODBC error messages, here's

From our experience, you have to use SQL89 with
Vantage 5.0 and Merant 3.60 32bit ODBC driver to
have any luck with ODBC.

Contact Epicor as they have a couple start and stop
.BAT files to help make this work. They should also
have instructions on exactly what you need to do.

I may be wrong but I don't believe there is a solution. Merant ODBC can
only handle so many thousands of characters. Many of the memo fields in
Vantage will cause this error. The only solution I have found was to export
the table to a text file and link to that.

Ron,
I have never run into that error with a comment field, but have had
similar problems with the part description field, which is also a l o n g
field (blob, it is sometimes called). Crystal doesn't let you use formulas
on blob or memo fields that are beyond 250 characters. The answer in
Crystal is to use an expression that truncates the field to 250 characters.
Then it seems you can use it in formulas and groups.

Should ODBC config be set for 4GL, SQL or both? I can't remember
when this was first set up what that was set to.
I believe you need to set it up with both SQL and 4GL. I may have missed
this response in a previous post, but have you tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the latest ODBC driver?

Thanks.

Thanks.

When we were on 5.0 we only had one server group. It was set to both. In
6.0 they split up the group to vantage sessions with 4GL only and ODBC
sessions with SQL only. I am not sure, the reason, so I won't guess, but
that is a change. So if you are setting up 5.0 for access by both vantage
and ODBC, I would say use the both setting.
