5.0 - odbc?

I installed 8.5 first (as recommended by Crystal) and then I installed the
downgrade they sell for $35.00 to 8.0. ODBC, Crystal and Vantage 5.0 seem to
work fine. It is Access2002 the one I have the ODBC fail calls and
corruptions.

I just finish installing it and run a report with a table containing 21k
and
some record. It worked fine. I am testing it now in the server and see how
it performs.

It may be best to uninstall crystal entirely before putting another
version
on your PC. I installed 8.0 over 7.0, and ended up having to reformat
before it worked entirely.

I have 523 mgs of mem, Pentium 4 at 1400 MHz. The server and network are
not
that sophisticated. I will keep you posted when I receive and install 5.1
and 9.1C. We need ODBC to be more stable because we use Access to
"massage"
the data used for EDI. I will install Crystal 8.5 and downgrade to 8.0 to
see how ODBC behaves. Maybe, it will be better (or worse)...

Do you think it is a memory issue? I've know Excel to blow up when there

too much info coming in. I really don't have any other clues. Do you
have
access to the Merant ODBC driver? I'd be curious whether that works

This was one of the documents I used to connect to ODBC. Since then, I
have
applied all fixes (.r's) and follow all instructions. I am still
having
the
problem that if a table has more than 7000 or 8000 records, I get an
ODBC
failed error message and corrupt the table.

-------------------------------------------------------------
How to connect an ODBC Client to eManufacturing database

Go to your ODBC Datasource Admininstrator in the Control Panel.

If you don't see the driver
MERANT 3.60 32-Bit Progress SQL92 v9.1A
Under User DSN, You will need to add it by choosing the Add button and
finding the above mentioned driver and then choose finish.

The next screen will be the configuration screen

Enter the Data Source Name -- Progress 9.1A ODBC
Enter the Description -- eManufacturing by Epicor
Enter the Host Name -- (Name of your Server)
Enter the port Number associated with the Database -- (Located in your
services file)
Enter the Database Name -- vantage
Enter User ID - sysprogress
No password is needed

Try clicking on the test connect button and then OK
You should get a message saying Connection established.

I would love it if you didn't need a password, but all that I've read

it's required - and is built into the SQL-92 drivers. If anyone can

it

Do you mean the user ID? Sysprogress should be the user ID and
password
should be clear. I set up the client (with the user id) and the ODBC
settings in Progress Explorer following the instructions and
installing
all
patches. Whenever an ODBC link is used, ODBC will call the connect
window
and clicking OK should be enough.

Did you assign a password to user id sysprogress?

I think I'm missing something. We went to 5.0 this past weekend and I am
unable to connect a client using ODBC. I have searched the Egroups file
sand I found instructions to set-up the "ODBC Server Configuration" and for
"CONFIGURING the ODBC CLIENT". I followed the directions as listed, but
when I click 'Test Connect' on the client, the system just hangs. Has
anyone else run into this and possibly have a solution?

Thanks,

I changed the port from the vantage database to port(2500) to the odbc port

refresh my links, I get the error:

ODBC - Call Failed
[Merant][ODBC Progress driver][PROGRESS]Access denied(Authorisation

Anyone know what this is or how to fix it?

Which ODBC are you trying to set up - Merant or SQL-92?

If using the SQL-92, there are three fixes you will want to apply. They are on the eGroups files list in a zip file which contains: odbcfix.r, odbsuser.r and the registry fix. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vantage/files/_Misc/
There are several ODBC helps in the Misc Directory.

How about using the old TELNET test. It should at least tell you whether
the server is listening on the port.

eg Start, Run, TELNET, Connect, Remote System, IP address, change "telnet"
to 2550 (or whatever you are using for ODBC). Should connect with nothing
displayed on the screen, and allow you to disconnect.

Sarah,

I assume you set up the ODBC in the Progress Explorer tool, correct? You have to add another group below the DefaultConnections, it has to be SQL, and this is where you set the port number, and the service name. Is the ODBC part of it running?

You've checked that the port number on the server to verify it matches the client? 2550 sounds like the recommended port number for Vantage 5.0. And NO, you shouldn't need to reference that port in the services file with SQL drivers.

Are you typing in the password "sysprogress"? You didn't need a password for Merant, but you do need one for each login with the SQL-92 drivers.

I can send you screen shots of what I have if you need.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Sarah,

Jay Erickson at Epicor sent me this some time ago. I could never get it to work, but maybe you can. I wasn't too motivated at the time because we don't use SQL-92 on a live database. Maybe you can get it going???? Let us all know.

Troy

-----------Beginning of forwarded message --------------------
You asked for this some time ago and we finally got it to work.
Below are instructions for bypassing the UserID and Password when connecting
to the database using ODBC. Now it appears there is a limitation in the
fact that Microsoft products works just fine, however Crystal does not know
what the PWD= parameter is and pops up the Login box anyway.
We have found for Crystal if you use the "Report Distribution
Expert" and create a distributed report, it does save the LoginID and
Password.

===========================================

How to save a password in an ODBC Data Source that uses MERANT ODBC
driver (SQL-89 or SQL-92).

EXPLANATION:

Some customers ask how can they save the user id and password in the
ODBC Data Source in order to connect to the Progress Database from
another application through ODBC (using the MERANT driver) without any
user input.

SOLUTION:

This kb is valid for SQL-89 and SQL-92, it has been tested with ODBC
MERANT driver 3-60 SQL-89 and SQL-92.

You will have to create a File DSN (instead of a System DSN or User
DSN) through the ODBC Data Source Administartor.

Once you have created it and tested the connection you will modify the file
just created. By default this file is kept in the directory: C:\Program
Files\Common Files\ODBC\Data Sources. Using Notepad or Wordpad edit and add
(or modify) the following lines:

UID=<userID>
PWD=<password>

The UID will already be present as 'sysprogress'. Simply open a new line
just beneith it and add PWD=sysprogress

*** NOTE: Once you have done this, you can't modify or save the File DSN
again on this workstation through the ODBC DS Administrator because it will
overwrite the file that you have modified and you will need to add one or
both of the lines again.

Afterwards if you, for example, use Excel to get the external data from a
Progress Database you will see that it doesn't ask for any user ID or
password.

==============================================

Example of a "SQL-92" File DSN after the modifications:

[ODBC]
Driver=MERANT 3.60 32-BIT Progress SQL92 v9.1A
UID=sysprogress
PWD=sysprogress
HOST=ntserver1
PORT=2550
DB=vantage

==============================================

Example of a "SQL-89" File DSN after the modifications:

[ODBC]
DRIVER=MERANT 3.60 32-BIT PROGRESS
UID=sysprogress
PWD=sysprogress
DB=vantage
OIDP=TCP
OIDS=prosv02
OIDH=pcjnunez2
DBAM=Via Server

database or reports?

Sarah,
Here's all we know on the subject. Again, from Jay at Epicor - Performance tuning for Progress Explorer and ODBC.

Troy

----------------Beginning of Forwarded message ---------------------------
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: How to set and fine tune the Progress Explorer
Tool, Default Configuration Settings and Parameters for both Vantage Clients
and ODBC Clients.

XA500

PROBLEM RESOLUTION:

=======================================
OPTIMIZING the PROGRESS EXPLORER TOOL
=======================================

To get the most out if each parameter, you will need to know the following
information ahead of time. Also consider the total number of users that
would potentially connect via ODBC. Fill in A through C below with the
appropriate values.

A) Your server's total RAM. Total: ____________MB

B) Total number of con-current connections being made to the database. This
would typically be the sum of all Vantage users (Office and DataCollection)
plus Report Builder users and Results Report users. These users are
considered "4GL Users". This total number is typically increased by 10 to
15 percent to compensate for dropped, hung or forgotten connections.
Total:___________________ 4GL Connections.

C) Total number of ODBC connections. These users are considered "SQL
Users". Each ODBC broker is a one-to-one with the user. So for example,
if you create a Crystal Report using ODBC and embed this report into the
Vantage menu where potentially all of your users could access it at the same
time, then the ODBC/SQL value would equal your total number of con-current
4GL user connections in the field above. Total ODBC
users/connections:_________________ SQL Connections.

HOW and WHERE to make the Changes:
=================================

NOTE: Changes to the Progress Explorer Tool can be made at any time. For
the changes to take effect, the database will need to be stopped and
restarted. In addition, we would recommend the Server be re-booted after
changes are made and the database has been stopped.

At the NT Server console

1. Open the Progress Explorer Tool for 9.1 and Log into Progress MMC.
Select CONSOLE --> OPTIONS. Make sure the "Open Console in Author Mode" is
checked.

** Note for Windows2000 you will need to add a switch to the Progress
Explorer Tool icon properties line. Add the switch /a into the Target
line ( ...mmc.exe /s /a "d:\91a\proexp.msc" ) Ok and save the icon changes.
See doc 996MPS for more details.

2. Double click on LocalHost server icon to display Databases. Again
double click on the Databases folder icon to display installed databases.
You should see two blue drums one titled EPIC50 and one titled EPIC50TRN.

3. Locate the Epic50 Database and double click. Double click again on the
"Configurations" folder to display the DefaultConfigurations blue drum.

4. Right mouse click on the DefaultConfigurations, select Properties. The
numbers entered in this screen will be TOTAL values on the one or two
ServerGroup screens under the DefaultConfiguration in the tree. This will be
based on whether or not you are implementing ODBC connections.

Change the following fields under each group that best reflects your setup
and environment.

** The fields discussed in this document will be only those that should be
changed from the default configuration value.

GENERAL:

- # Blocks in DB Buffer =

For the Live Production Database, this should be set at 1/3 to ½ of your
server's
total RAM. Leave the Training database at zero. So if your Server has 512
MB
RAM, you would want to allocate approximately 170 to 256 MB RAM. Use the
grid below to best select the Number of Blocks you wish to put into the
Buffer.

Setting RAM Allocated
====== ============
10000 42.2 MB RAM
20000 83.8 MB
30000 125.3 MB
40000 166.5 MB
50000 210.7 MB
60000 252.9 MB
70000 295.1 MB
80000 337.3 MB
90000 379.5 MB
100000 421.7 MB
110000 463.9 MB
120000 506.1 MB
etc...

* Each 10000 unit increase equals approximate 41.5 MB RAM

- # Hash Table entries = 0 (Leave at default - DO NOT CHANGE)

- # Lock table entries = 8192 (Leave at default)

- Maximum Users =

Maximum Users is your total number of ALL users + 10 to 15 %. IF, you are
considering ODBC connections, add these in now. (i.e. 100 Vantage and
Report Builder Users + 15% = 115, plus 50 ODBC users = 165 Maximum Users).
Enter the number in this field.

- Maximum Servers =

The Maximum Servers on this page/screen is an accumulative total of the
Vantage (4GL users) divided by 4 PLUS the total ODBC or SQL users PLUS one.

--> If ODBC is being implemented, and we use the example above, 115 4GL
users divided by 4 = 28.75 or 29 + 50 + 1 = 80 Maximum Servers.

--> If you are NOT implementing ODBC at this time, simply take the total
number of 4GL users (item B from above) and divide by 4. So again, 115
4GL users divided by 4 = 28.75 or 29. Always round up to the next whole
number.

The number 4 is the total number of users allowed per 4GL Server broker.
This number has been chosen for optimum performance. This number can
range from 1 to 10. The performance tradeoff to consider is the "swapping"
overhead for many Servers versus overloading a server with too many clients.
This number 4 will be set later.

BACKGROUND WRITERS Section:

- Asynchronous Page Writer:
# APW's to Start = 2

We have found 2 to be the optimum number of APW's. Set this value to 2.

** See the FINE TUNING section at end of this document.

FORMAT: No Changes Required

ADVANCED:
- Spin Lock Retries =

The values used in this field can range from 1 to 10000. We recommend
setting
this value to at least 1. Typically for a single processor use 1000, for a
dual
processor use 2000.
If 3 or 4 processors are being used you can increase to 3000, 4000 or
higher,
however it is rarely necessary to increase this number above 2000 and can
sometimes cause problems. Therefore, we would recommend for 2 or more
processors use 2000.

Click [OK] and close the DefaultConfiguration Properties window.

=============================

STOP! --> QUESTION: Are you implementing ODBC connections at this time?
If YES, proceed to next step. If NO, jump to step # 7.

=============================

5. Right mouse click on the DefaultConfiguration, select NEW. Give the
new group the name: ODBCGroup. All one word, no spaces. Click OK.
This will open the new ODBCGroup screen properties.

6. At the top of the screen, for CLIENT TYPE: click on "SQL Only".
Next, fill in the remaining fields for the new ODBCGroup:

GENERAL Section:

- Service Name or Port Number:

This Service Port Number will be new and unique from the Epic50 and the
Epic50trn port number. Using port number 2550 should work fine. This
new Port Number is the number you will use when setting up the workstations
DSN.

- Number of Servers:

Number of Servers will equal item C on the first page. Again, this is the
total number users who will using ODBC.

CLIENTS Section:

- Maximum clients per server: Set this to 1

- Minimum clients per server: Set this to 1

Click [OK] and close the ODBCGroup properties window.

This completes the setup of the ODBCGroup for SQL Clients only.

7. Right mouse click on the DefaultServerGroup and select Properties.

8. At the top of the DefaultServerGroup - "Properties" screen, a
selection will need to made for the CLIENT TYPE:

- If you have just finished doing steps 5 and 6 for setup of the ODBC
clients, click on "4GL Only".

- If you are skipping directly to step 7 bypassing the ODBC setup,
then leave the "Both 4GL and SQL" option selected.

Next, fill in the remaining fields for each section listed below:

GENERAL Section:

- Service Name or Port Number:

The Service number that was added to this field at the time Vantage was
installed.
Do not change.

- Number of Servers:

This is the Number of Servers necessary to handle all of the 4GL client
connections to the database. This number is obtained by taking item B on
page 1 which was the total number of Vantage and Report Builder users
divided by 4.

If you have NOT implemented ODBC then this number will be the same as
Maximum Servers on the DefaultConfiguration screen.

- Message buffer size: (default is 1024)

The Message Buffer determines the size of the message buffers Progress uses
for
sending and receiving messages in client-server configurations. Using
TCP/IP, it
is much more efficient to send one 1,000 byte long message than it is to
send ten
100 byte long messages.

The default value of the message buffer size is 1024 bytes. If you wish to
improve
performance, increase this parameter to 4096. This will allow the server to
send
much more data per network message when it can. When there are less data
than a
full buffer, shorter messages will be transmitted.

If you are planning on changing this value, you will need to change it in
the client
parameter file (Vantage.pf) also.

First, change this value here to 4096

Second, modify the Client's startup parameter and value in your
C:\Epic50\Vantage\Db\Vantage.pf. Right mouse click the Vantage.pf file and
select EDIT. Change the -Mm 1024 to -Mm 4096.

Third, edit the C:\Epic50\Progress\Startup.pf file and add the -Mm 4096
parameter to the end of this file.

Please note that if you have a local installation of Vantage and Progress,
then the Vantage.pf will be locally on the machine. This file needs to be
edited as well, as in the case of a Gateway local installation. If in
question as to where the client is reading the Vantage.pf, it is easily
learned through viewing the parameter file .vtg that launches the session.
Find the vantage.vtg and right click Edit then the value of
'ParameterFile='.

CLIENTS Section:

- Maximum clients per server:

This is the value used to divide the total number of 4GL (Vantage and Report
Builder) users on page two of this document. If 4 was used as recommended,
enter number 4 here.

This parameter tells the system the maximum number of users per Server
broker.
By default, any users over 5 per server broker get to wait for other users
requests
to complete before it responds to the 6 user and so on.

- Minimum clients per server:

Set this number equal to the Maximum clients per server value. This
parameter tells Progress not to spawn another Server Broker until there are
at least a minimum number of users on the first broker.

Click [OK] and close the DefaultServerGroup properties window.

9. The database must now be Stopped and Re-Started for the new parameter
settings to take place. Again, we would recommend re-booting the server
after the database is stopped. This will clear all brokers in shared
memory.

===========================

FINE TUNING:

Using PROMON and to review parameters for necessary changes.

At the peak of the day when processing is at it best, start a
PROMON session against your 5.0 eManufacturing database on your server.

Select #5 "Activity" from the menu.

At the bottom of the Activity menu press "U" to allow an automatic 8 second
refresh of the Activity screen.

Take note of the BUFFER HITS percentage. This should be at least
90% or higher. If it is still at or below 90%, increase the "# of Block in
DB buffer" under the DefaultConfiguration --> Properties window by another
10000.

Also, on the "Activity" screen, note the "Writes by APW" value. If
this is at 100% all of the time, increase the "# APW's to start" value.
This parameter value is found under DefaultConfiguration --> Properties
window, Background Writers section. Do this ONLY if the Writes by APW is
pinned at 100%.

Finally, Stop and Restart the database if Progress Explorer Tool parameters
were changed. Again, monitor the Promon --> Activity screen to see if
additional changes are necessary.

Subject: RE: [Vantage] 5.0 - ODBC?

I was just watching the performance monitor on the Vantage server while I
was running an ODBC report (which took a couple minutes to run) and it shot
to 100% and stayed there until the ODBC application was closed. Does
anybody know if this is normal, or if there is a way to reduce that?
