Off Topic Nt Users

Thanks for all the help all. I bit the bullet added another name and went
around and did all the permissions manually to get around the problem. Chalk
it up as another Microsoft but I guess.

Hello all,

where Everyone has permissions, but I cant get to the files that have the

is shown with Full Access privileges. Yet I cant enter the file. Has anyone
seen this problem before.

the permissions are still referencing the old account name... have you tried
replacing the permissions?

We no longer allow attachments to files. To access/share Report Files,
please go to the following link: http://www.egroups.com/files/vantage/
(Note: If this link does not work for you the first time you try it, go to
www.egroups.com, login and be sure to save your password, choose My Groups,
choose Vantage, then choose Files. If you save the password, the link above
will work the next time you try it.)
Eric,
I'm not sure why you want/need to have the account on the workstation, but
if you are logging in to the local account and then trying to access
resources on the server that have permissions for the domain account then
that will not work because the network sees them as two separate accounts.
The only account we have on our workstations is the Administrator account
(for emergencies where we can't logon to the network). Otherwise, all
accounts are domain objects and there is little or no confusion about which
account is being used.
Hopefully I haven't misread your message. Hope this helps.

Hello Eric,
I am familiar with this problem, drove me WILD for weeks before I figured it
out.
Here's how to fix it.
1. log of and restart the machine.
2. When the machine boots up, DO NOT log into the network. You should have
a domain logon option with a drop down list on the login window. On that
list should be the WORKSTATION name.
3. When you log into the WORKSTATION, (not the network) log in with an
account with ADMINISTRATOR privileges. This may be tough if you didnt set
this machine up. THEN go to the ADMINISTRATIVE tools for the workstation
and setup priviledges for accessing the workstation itself. NT is ACTUALLY
giving HIGHER HIERARCHY TO THE WORKSTATION ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, the network
comes second. Good Luck

Eric,
I had this problem once and that was due to me having the password on the
remote machine in all caps, and the password on the server was all
lowercase. If you think you may be as absent minded as myself you may want
to check that out. Sometimes it is the simple things we overlook.

Eric,
I still don't understand why you need to have the local account....
If the user logs on to the domain account then you shouldn't have any
problems with the files on the server.

The server doesn't look at the username when figuring out whether to allow
access to files; its looking at the SID (security ID - a unique number
assigned to the user account). Since the local account is separate from the
domain account, they both have different SIDs even though they have the same
username.

Try logging in at the workstation by pointing to the domain rather than the
workstation account and see if you can access the files.

Steve,

Since it's a member server there is no domain tied to the server. So I do
not get the benefits of a full blown server. Unfortunately.

If the user logs on to the domain account then you shouldn't have any

The server doesn't look at the username when figuring out whether to allow

Try logging in at the workstation by pointing to the domain rather than the
workstation account and see if you can access the files.
NT stores permissions by the SID (Security ID) which is created uniquely for
new accounts, even with same name. So permissions are indexed by the SID of
the old account and not the new SID with the re-created account. I am not
sure what rules are used to create the SID, perhaps name + date/time or a
random number.

There is an article in the MS-KnowledgeBase for this at:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q197/0/06.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=g
n&FR=0 which might help.
