Well, I recently had to restore a bunch of files & they ended up as read
only.
I changed them all en mass from the command line.
attrib -R *.* /D /S
Good enough?

Hey Bruce
Actually, it is not Vantage data at all. It is Word, Excel, Act and
Peachtree. Actually we had not old equipment to switch to test with
at the
time.

I agree with a later reply that setting up a trust might work.
I've done this a lot with WinNT4 but not Win2K.
However, I'm also just a little intrigued.
Maybe I missed an earlier post with more info?
If so, forgive me for asking.

>Have a W2k AD server.<
>Created new DC on W2k3 and gave it an entirely<
>different domain name.<
Any special reason why you went with a new domain name?

>All the data files were on the old server so<
>I copies them to the new server.<
>Now they are all "Read Only".<
Are we talking about database files? As in Progress?

>I wanted to demote the old server and make it a member server of
the<
>new domain in an attempt to get these files onto the new server
but<
>if I do this what will happen? I am a little worried that I can't
get<
>these files onto the new server and still be able to access them.
<
I wouldn't just do this without having used test servers first.
Even if somebody with a lot of experience gives you good
instructions,
there may be something unique to your environment.
I always set up a few old PC's in a test lab and experiment before I
ever do anything on production servers. Most companies have old
hardware
laying around to play with.

What is your intent?
Are you just trying to retire and older Vantage server and migrate
your
data to new hardware?

Have a W2k AD server. Created new DC on W2k3 and gave it an entirely

I copies them to the new server. Now they are all "Read Only". I

Lois

I would bring the 2003 DC up in the same domain and let them replicate.
AD is AD and they will communicate without a hitch. You can always shut down
the old DC when all is well. You can use a utility I believe is called
Netdom to change the domain name on the new one.
I'm not an authority but (I've been staying at a Holiday Inn Express -
NOT) I've been studying to bring my NT 4 domain forward to 2003 this summer.

Good Luck !! Hope you see the new year in at home NOT discussing the
parentage of a server at work.

Start/Administrative Tools/AD domains and trusts

highlight the AD, right click and select properties.

Select the second tab. Trusts.

I've done this between an AD and a NT 4.0 domain. Not sure if this will do it for you but something to try. I know just enough about AD to cause utter chaos so use my suggestion with some caution.

In other words...USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Have a Happy (and safe) New Year!

Hey Bruce
Actually, it is not Vantage data at all. It is Word, Excel, Act and
Peachtree. Actually we had not old equipment to switch to test with at the

>I wanted to demote the old server and make it a member server of the<
>new domain in an attempt to get these files onto the new server but<
>if I do this what will happen? I am a little worried that I can't get<
>these files onto the new server and still be able to access them. <
I wouldn't just do this without having used test servers first.
Even if somebody with a lot of experience gives you good instructions,
there may be something unique to your environment.
I always set up a few old PC's in a test lab and experiment before I
ever do anything on production servers. Most companies have old hardware
laying around to play with.

What is your intent?
Are you just trying to retire and older Vantage server and migrate your
data to new hardware?

Does Mike England still manage the Vantage yahoo group? If so does anyone
know his e-mail. The one I have on file doesn't work anymore. My mail
server and yahoo's mail server both bounced back when I sent mail to
mike@... <mailto:mike@...>

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks
