[OT] Windows 2000 Desktop Office File Issues

Thanks,
I was able to recover all the files he could remember to have me copy off using NTFSDOS. A great free tool. I put it on a Win98 boot disk (to get DOS) and ran it and it gave me DOS prompt access to the NTFS drive with no problem at all. So I copied the needed files to floppies and all was well after I scrubbed the drive and reloaded Win2K and all his apps. Only hitch was a couple files he had forgotten that were stored in application specific folders (Visio and a QC stats program).

If you really need the files then pull the drive out and put it into
another W2K system as a second hard drive. Pull the data off the drive
and reinstall the OS correctly. You may have to take control of the
second hard drive to get access to the files. This should not be a
problem if you log in as Admin

I'm off to try the Recovery Console. If that does not work, does anyone
out there have experience with a product called ERD Commander? Looks
like a very powerful tool to have around and claims to be able to re-set
just about anything on an unbootable (but not disk corrupt) Win2K
system. If I get really stuck it might be worth the $399. I have also
downloaded NTFSDOS (free) to maybe be able to recover user files before
a reformat/reinstall. But 1st I'll see if the RC route works.
Thanks,
-Todd C.

Todd,

Bad boy. If you changed permissions on the boot, kernel and system
files, then the LSA cannot read them on system startup. Just be glad
it wasn't the server <g>. Sometimes the Recovery Console can help
you change them back (for now, set permissions to "Everyone"). If not,
Recovery Installation ("Repair boot files") might work.

have fun,
john

We are slowly converting to Windows 2000 (desktop and servers). Over the weekend we replaced our aging NT-SBS server with a new Win2K/Exchange2K box and had to create a new domain. So every PC in the place had to be repointed to login to the new domain. Plus all the file sharing and printer sharing issues that have kept me running this week.

Now I am stuck on one particuler user. One of my few Win2K desktop people. When I added him to the new domain all his documents in MyDocuments were over on his old username on his PC so he moved them to the new one (using that PC's Administrator account). Now he can not open any Office-2000 file (Word, Excel) when logged in as his regular account name. The only error message is (for instance), "Excel has caused errors, this application will be temrinated. A log file will be created.". Outlook bombs (completely locks up PC) every 5 minutes. I completely uninstalled and installed Office-2000 but that did not help. One extra clue; he can open the documents fine logged in as Administrator or even as his old username on that PC only. I tried changing his network username on the PC to be an Administrator (from PowerUser) with no luck.

Is there some domain name related permissions issue built in to his Office files that prevent him from accessing them? . Could there be a SID issue with the new user account that I set up? Is there some setting I can make on everything in his MyDocuments folder to make them OK for him to use? Where would the log file it created on the error be loacted? Any hints would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
-Todd Caughey

Yep...I know this one well. This is a typical problem when moving users
resources from one domain to another

The problem is that the files still have the permissions for the old
user. Move the files from the old profile to the new profile and "reset
permissions on all child objects..." on the new profile name. That will
clear everything up

Thanks, sounds great but how do you set the child permissions? Right Clicking the top folder and selecting Properties (as suggested in Help) does not offer a Security tab. Just Sharing. As far as I can tell there is no way to change the permissions without the Security tab. I have tried logging in to every profile on the PC including Administrator to see if one would allow seting security.

Sorry to be such a Win2K novice. As usual all the budget allows for is on-line OJT classes at the College of Hardknocks. That which frustrates most sitcks in memory the best.

Since you have no security tab I would assume that the system is running
on FAT32 instead of NTFS.

The other possibility I just thought of is that you need to setup the
person as a user on the new domain (I usually give Power Users rights).
This can be done from Users option in the Control Panel. If you did not
setup the user on the workstation, the domain will let the person login
but have no rights to do anything

If you copy the files (instead of moving) to the new location, they will
take on the permissions of the folder you are copying to. Moving them,
retains the original permissions.

1. Yes, he moved them rather than copying
2. System was set to FAT32 by Micron so I converted it to NTFS and got the Security tab
3. This did not seem to make any difference no matter what I tried
4. Eventually I did something very bad (set whole drive to be owned by him and all files full control) and now the system will not boot at all. Blue screen - system stops just as Windows 2000 starts. I think it might be toast and we are headed for a full reformat & Win2K install.

Todd,

Bad boy. If you changed permissions on the boot, kernel and system
files, then the LSA cannot read them on system startup. Just be glad
it wasn't the server <g>. Sometimes the Recovery Console can help
you change them back (for now, set permissions to "Everyone"). If not,
Recovery Installation ("Repair boot files") might work.

have fun,
john

I'm off to try the Recovery Console. If that does not work, does anyone out there have experience with a product called ERD Commander? Looks like a very powerful tool to have around and claims to be able to re-set just about anything on an unbootable (but not disk corrupt) Win2K system. If I get really stuck it might be worth the $399. I have also downloaded NTFSDOS (free) to maybe be able to recover user files before a reformat/reinstall. But 1st I'll see if the RC route works.

Todd,

ERD Commander is a must-have if your NT/2K/XP population is large
enough, and it should work for your issue. I've used it for similar
problems, and others.

have fun,
john

I second that. I've used it for years and if it can't fix the problem, then
it can't be fixed.

Todd,

Where did you find that for $399? I could use that too.

I'm off to try the Recovery Console. If that does not work, does anyone out
there have experience with a product called ERD Commander? Looks like a
very powerful tool to have around and claims to be able to re-set just about
anything on an unbootable (but not disk corrupt) Win2K system. If I get
really stuck it might be worth the $399. I have also downloaded NTFSDOS
(free) to maybe be able to recover user files before a reformat/reinstall.

If not,
Recovery Installation ("Repair boot files") might work.

have fun,
john

www.sysinternals.com - They have lots of interesting tools. I downloaded the free NTFSDOS and placed it on a Win98 Emergency Boot Disk (it's small) and once booted on the Win2K machine ran it and gained access to the user's files. Copied the recent ones not backed up to floppies so at least he has lost nothing (but time on his PC). ERD Commander has a built in version of Locksmith that allows you to change passwords (such as Administrator) and this alone could be a great tool. With our switch to all Win2K over the course of 2003 (40+ PCs) I think I'm going to have to have it in my "tool kit".

Recovery Console got me back to a bootable system but things were still really messed up so I am reformatting and reloading Win2K from scratch. Much cleaner this way and I've spent enough time on it already.

Thanks to everyone for the afvice and product votes of confidence.

-Todd C.

If you really need the files then pull the drive out and put it into
another W2K system as a second hard drive. Pull the data off the drive
and reinstall the OS correctly. You may have to take control of the
second hard drive to get access to the files. This should not be a
problem if you log in as Admin
