Off Topic - T1

Just a quick thought. Find out the length of contract and the penalty if
you want out early. With costs and tech. changes occuring for the best I
think it pays to have short contracts like one year.

Were are looking into a T1 line. I have a company coming in today at
2:00. Can anyone give me any advice, what to look for or ask? I am not
sure how straight forward T1's are, but I have very little experience
or knowledge on them.

We are looking possibly voice and data - but we may decide to go with
just data.

Over what distance? Is this just a local loop or are you going cross
country with it?

We have T1 lines for voice and data. Each T1 has 23 channels on it for
voice. You can have all or part of them activated. We use a full T1 for
voice plus kept some regular phone lines for backup... just in case the T1
went down... It hasn't gone down since it was intalled. As for Data, we use
a full T1... you can get a "burstable" service and they only charge you for
the bandwidth you use. We had ours set up this way, but found it less
expensive to pay for the full 1.54GB of bandwidth. If you are just starting
out I would suggest getting the T1 through your ISP and get them to setup
the router and work out the buggs.

Hope this helps

Regardless of what your purchasing T1, T1 Prime, T1 with data, ask your
vendor to visit sites near yours doing exactly what your going to install.
Ask your site visit hosts what worked and what did not.

Are you looking for a "point to point" T1 between two company locations
(data and private voice) or is this for Internet and external Phone Service?
If for Internet alone make sure it is really a full T1 or whether it is a
frame relay connection over a T1 where you set a CIR (commited information
rate) that could be lower than the full T1. The last time I looked T1's
between locations were very distance sensitive price wise. T1 to an ISP, if
they are relatively close, can be reasonable for the added bandwidth
compared to DSL or cable. I''ve read lately prices have come down a lot.
Having had two carriers go belly up be sure to check their financial
condition very closely. Also are they a Tier I carrier with their own
national backbone network or are they a reseller. What sort of line
monitoring and alerts do they have? We do our phone services (local and LD)
on a T1 line but not with the same company (or T1) as our Internet
connection. Finally, get some local references and check them about the
vendors service, responsiveness, tech support, relation to local phone
company (last mile) and financial condition.

These are a few of the things I would be looking at.

Dina,

Some things to look into:

Do you need full or partial T1
Does cost cover both ISP and the telco
Cost of additional equip - router - firewall
Will they set it up for you
Will they maintain it for you
Backup phone line and modem that auto-kicks in if T1 fails

What else do people do....

Our company lis located in an Industrial park, with mostly large companies
with big budgets. AKA they all have T1's.

We cannot get DSL or Cable modems here, we are too far away from a service
point.

Any suggestions besides our painful dial-up?

Try calling your local ISP's and ask them if they are providing any wireless
links yet. Several of our local ISP's have started offering wireless links
in just the last few months in response to competition from cable modems and
DSL service.
