(off topice) Unigraphics computers

We use it for Sheet-metal design and for machining. A third party program is utilized to convert cad models into machine language.
One of the features we liked about Solid works is that there architecture is open to third party vendors. Many of these third party
vendors have produced excellent programs for stress and heat analysis, machining, etc. It may be that the
feature you need for producing mold designs is also available.

We also have a Pro-E Seat as well as AutoCAD and Cadkey. But since we
started using Solidworks we use the others only for
files we can't open any other way.

Some years ago (seven, I think), our company hired John Steffen Assoc's in
St Louis to move all of our Prime (formerly ComputerVision) files to a Sun
Sparc2 box on which resided AutoCad 13. The unix box was a "holding" cell
for .DXF files until such time as the Novell server was upgraded to
accommodate all the THOUSANDS of dxf's we had. The reason we had AutoCad
on the box was for reviewing Medusa files, just in case. From AutoCad's
dxf format we translated to Bentley's MicroStation (DWG
format). MicroStation, however, outlived its usefulness due to some major
foot-dragging in the 3D solids arena. MicroStation modeler (even version
J) just couldn't hold a candle to SolidWorks, our current design
platform. Software houses are now jumping on the band wagon with
SolidWorks as fast as they did with MicroStation.

That said, why would anyone go with ProEngineer when there is such a better
front-end in SolidWorks? Yes, we have seats of ProEngineer, but
"unfriendly" is the term everyone around here uses to describe its
front-end.

We are looking to purchase Unigraphics software. (Yes, I did say we were cheap in my last message, but we do squeeze out the account every once in a great while!) My job is to research the best computer to handle the software. Are any of you using Unigraphics? If so, what type of system do you recommend? I have heard that DELL is the way to go if you need to purchase a UG computer. Any suggestions?

It will run on any Intel or AMD platform. Dell, Gateway, HP, Compaq, or
custom.
Lots of memory is the big difference with CAD machines. If you are going to
use
3D solids, then you want FAST processors, LARGE disk drives to save the
files
on (server or workstation), and 20" or larger HIGH quality monitors.

Unigraphics has a hardware bundle with HP... we purchased UG15 (upgraded to
16) and got a HP Kayak Visualize Workstation with UG purchase. However as
nice as the HP Kayaks are they're overpriced IMHO. The majority of our
CAD/Solids workstations are dual processor Dell 420 Workstations running
Visi/Solids, Unigraphics 15-16, ExpertCAD and a number of other 2D and 3D
apps.

You should check on Unigraphics website for certified hardware
specifications. We have two qualified Compaq workstations and the other
computers are clones with the same motherboard and video card as the
certified computer. If the computer is not a certified computer by
Unigraphics, Unigraphics can refuse to assist you with a problem. We have
never had a problem with the clones that Unigraphics would not assist us.
However, it was recommended by Unigraphics to have at the very minimal two
computers that were certified. If a problem occurs you can check to see if
the problem occurs on the cerified computer before calling Unigraphics. I
believe Dell was rated number 1 last year surpassing HP and Compaq for
realiablity.

Speaking of Unigraphics, anyone doing translation from Unigraphics to
ProEngineer? How are you doing it? I've been wrestling with this one for a
couple months.

How about ComputerVision to ProEngineer (although PTC bought CV about a year
and a half ago, PTC still doesn't have anything in the way of translation
from their former competitor).
