[OT] Hidden Desktop Shortcut

Ah yes. That's the trick. I tried it directly in the root start menu, and also made my own directory off the root start menu --neither of which worked. Putting the shortcut under "Programs" works.

(btw: SP3)

Wait. IF I put it it directly into the root start menu, it doesn't work.
If I put it back under programs, it works again.

So apparently hotkeys aren't recognized in the root directory of the start
menu, but they are recognized on the desktop and under the programs menu.

What servicepack are you running?

I have the crystal reports shortcut on the startmenu set to ctrl+alt+c, and
its working just fine.

I'm on SP3.

It will recognize then anywhere in the Start Menu tree, too. I like to
setup a Start Menu\My Stuff\Keyboard Shortcuts and prefix each shortcut's
name with its key letter.

Here's an odd question for any Windows experts. I know how to make a keyboard "Shortcut key" for a desktop icon. But is there a way to HIDE that icon so that it does not show up on the desktop but still works from the keyboard shortcut key?

Troy,

If your folder settings are set up to hide hidden and system files, you can
right click on the shortcut, and make its properties as hidden.

Alternatively, you can nest the shortcut containing the hotkey within the
start menu.

Windoze has always been stupid about recognizing them. It can take a while
before they work. Sometimes manually clicking on it, or logging out or
restarting will make them work. The TweakUI utility for some versions of
windoze also has a repair function that's supposed to help. I've never had
them refuse to work - but sometimes you have to be patient.

BTW, be sure to setup keyboard shortcuts for Command, NotePad, and
RegEdit. With those handy, you don't need much else!
