Jim,

Attached is a Word doc with an overview. Let me know if you have questions
or problems. It is straight forward and don't worry you really can't screw
anything up in your AD.

Todd,
We have had AD since the first of the year and I wanted to use a policy, but
I never was able to feel comfortable enough to try it. I was afraid I would
mess up the security for all pc's. That's why I went with the individual
registry hacks. After that, it was a simple matter of cloning the hard
driver for the other pc's. Can you give me some directions or point me to a
good simple source on setting up a group policy. I'm sure there will be some
things I want to do in the future using policies. I have a logon banner, but
again I use reg. hacks for that.
That would be a great use of group policy.

All of these things being mentioned here can be done for free with WIN2K
Policies. I would not use gpedit.msc as this requires you to maintain each
workstation separately. If you create a group policy in active directory you
have all the same options as gpedit.msc plus about a thousand more and they
can all be managed by one policy on the server rather than on each separate
workstation. And it is free and easy/simple to do. Just my 2 cents.

Todd

All,

Here is my OT question for the day:
The shop floor has discovered how to change the screensaver on the WIN2K
time clocks. Our beautiful company logo gets changed constantly to text
banners with crude and often misspelled synonyms of bodyparts or functions
thereof.

I could write a policy for two machines blocking this feature. I would
rather disable the screensaver tab in the registry. Just wondering if this
can be done. I am probably looking over the key and TweakUI doesn't do it
right, either. PLease help me out, it's bugging me...

TIA,

Paul

Check any Brady distributor if you don't mind paying premium prices:
http://www.bradyid.com/web/SiteBuilder/BradyiISBv1r0.nsf/FLV/FindDistributor

I am sure there are other outlets available online that can sell you similar
labels for much less than brand name Brady labels. As long as you have a
general idea of your label size and material, someone will be able to sell
it to you.

Zebra machines are pretty much bullet proof, I am sure they don't mind
printing on cheap labels.

Very simple if you are using WIN2K Server and Active Directory. Put a
group policy (very easy to create and implement in WIN2K Server) on the
Security Group that you want to lock down. With Group Policy you can
lock the machine down so tight that you can't do anything but run
vantage. I use policies here for all kinds of things. My shop floor
people can literally do nothing but use Vantage. Nothing under START
menu, no visibility or access to local or network resources. No
visibility or access to printers or any control panels. Very easy to do
and completely eliminates visits to the shop floor computers to fix
stupid problems most often created purposely by users. I began using
policies after a user of a workstation that is used by 10-15 people
password protected the screen saver rendering the workstation useless to
everyone else. Brilliant.

There are all kinds of good settings in there for locking things down. You
can probably find what you want under Windows Explorer or Desktop.

Subject: [Vantage] OT: Hiding Screensaver Tab in Win2K

I ended up going with the gpedit.msc solution. Aaahhh... nothing like the

Fortress does sound like a good product and I considered using it, but I
believe it is just an easy interface to the registry hacks I listed.

I wanted to do the policy restrictions, but they were not tight enough in my
opinion.

I have our timeclocks (W2K OS) with :
No right clicks, nothing on the task bar other than the start button,
nothing on the desktop,
The only item in the start menu is programs. Inside of programs is start up
with data collection in it but I have DC hidden and restricted with user
permissions.
This also limits their ability to right click on programs and browse.
The only hole I found was the slight ability to get on the internet from
within vantage.
I was able to block that within Internet explorer using a fake proxy server
setting.

All of these things being mentioned here can be done for free with WIN2K
Policies. I would not use gpedit.msc as this requires you to maintain
each workstation separately. If you create a group policy in active
directory you have all the same options as gpedit.msc plus about a
thousand more and they can all be managed by one policy on the server
rather than on each separate workstation. And it is free and easy/simple
to do. Just my 2 cents.

Todd,
We have had AD since the first of the year and I wanted to use a policy, but
I never was able to feel comfortable enough to try it. I was afraid I would
mess up the security for all pc's.
That's why I went with the individual registry hacks. After that, it was a
simple matter of cloning the hard driver for the other pc's.
Can you give me some directions or point me to a good simple source on
setting up a group policy.
I'm sure there will be some things I want to do in the future using
policies.
I have a logon banner, but again I use reg. hacks for that.

Todd
Jim,

Attached is a Word doc with an overview. Let me know if you have
questions or problems. It is straight forward and don't worry you really
can't screw anything up in your AD.

Jim,

I am wondering why you did not choose to set this in the registry if you
don't want them to be able to click it either. I did this with our DC
computers, taking a hint from some of the virus programmers out there.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Create a string value. Set the value to the same as your vantage
shortcut.
Now you can remove the programs from the start menu also. To restart a
session of Vantage that someone shut down (or crashed for some reason)
simply requires a logoff (using something to automatically log back on
as I am guessing Fortress can do).
Just trying to get you over that hurtle of removing the last item from
the start menu.
Good luck,
Aaron Hoyt

Fortress does sound like a good product and I considered using it, but I
believe it is just an easy interface to the registry hacks I listed.

I wanted to do the policy restrictions, but they were not tight enough
in my
opinion.

I have our timeclocks (W2K OS) with :
No right clicks, nothing on the task bar other than the start button,
nothing on the desktop,
The only item in the start menu is programs. Inside of programs is start
up
with data collection in it but I have DC hidden and restricted with user
permissions.
This also limits their ability to right click on programs and browse.
The only hole I found was the slight ability to get on the internet from
within vantage.
I was able to block that within Internet explorer using a fake proxy
server
setting.

www.fortres.com <http://www.fortres.com>

We use the Fortres product to lock down all of our shop floor PC's.

Icons and printer folder are on the desktop. Start bar is totally
disabled
except for shut down/restart. Right click menu options are gone. My
computer, internet explorer, the ablility to move-change-delete icons
....
ALLLL gone ....

What you see is what you get.

Haven't had a problem since.
