[OT] MS Server License question [SMC WIRE FABRICAT ORS]

What Jeremy said - but if you want to use License Manager anyway, you can
reset it by following the procedures outlined in Technet Q153140 or Q194065.

I was having allot of issues when trying to use the MS Licensing Manager.
After a call to Microsoft the tech told me that he wouldn't us that program
and its still very buggy.
So I stopped using it.

That's the way I understand the CAL licensing, per seat anyway. However, if
you look at the license manager it logs on a per user and does not contain
anything about other devices. I've also found a lot of peculiarities about
the license manager, what it stores, and when it says I am out of licenses.
These are:

1. If a user accidentally types over the domain name when logging into the
network it logs a license used by wrongdomain\user.

2. Any NT machine that had a machine account on the network shows up
forever, even if that machine account is deleted. It also logs any instance
of another user logging onto that machine.

3. Accounts that have been deleted 4 years ago still show up.

4. Accounts and access from our old corporate WAN that hasn't been
connected for 2 years still show up.

5. About once every two weeks it says I'm out of licenses, so I go in to
product view and one-by-one revoke used licenses generated by all of the
above. Two weeks later they are all back again.

Fabulous programming I think.

Rick,

I agree with you on all points. The reason your licenses keep popping back
up is that when you purge them on one server the other servers simply
replicate the info back in.

If you search technet you will find instructions on deleting and re-creating
the license log files. Note that you have to purge your PDC and BDC's at the
same time.

I went through this about a year ago trying to "clean up" my licensing on my
servers. During a 5 year period this company had about a 30-40% turnover
rate per year of people who had NT signon's. My licensing files showed that
we had about 10 times as many "Used" licenses as we did PC's.

So, I download the instructions, came in on a weekend, zapped the files, and
couldn't log on to the network. It cost us $ 250 to call NT tech support
for help. They had to email me a utility called NETDOM to reset our domain.
Such FUN !!!

In retrospect I'd say screw it and just set your license files for 1000
valid licenses and don't worry about it. Even the MS tech admitted that the
licensing logic on the servers is DEEPLY flawed.

From an auditing standpoint you are better off to just have a Access DB (
whatever ) showing all of your PC's, etc, with all software installed on
every machine. Then make sure you have a filing cabinet with all of the
documentation you need at your fingertips.

Looking for some help here. We entered a receipt for the wrong PO number.
The line was then updated later to the correct PO number. Problem is 1) the
receipt is still showing up on the old PO number in part tracker and PO
tracker. Deleted receipt but now the part tracker shows the receipt being
deleted on the 2nd PO number not the first. Anyone know of a database
conversion to correct if is somehow we can reenter the receipt and then
correct it the right way? Time phase in wrong and this will cause a problem.
Still on 3.00.632

Thanks,

Jim
