[OT] Server replacement

Hi John,
I hope things are going well. I'm doing much the same thing this Holiday
minus the Vantage part. The replacement server for Vantage won't be here
for 2 weeks. I'm suppose to do it over Christmas. Happy holidays to me!

I'm replacing our 266Mhz PII NT4 PDC. It's the DHCP and WINS server here
too. It also has all the files, home shares, and printers for
Accounting, Sales, and our Service dept. I worked on it from home about
12 hours yesterday. Home you say? Yes! We have a Citrix Metaframe
server. By using the Metaframe software remotely and Netmeeting remote
desktop sharing on the LAN I was able to take over both the new and old
servers. I copied about 40000 files/19GB to the new server. I had to
redo most of the shares because the old system had 3 drives and all the
files go on 1 (RAID) drive on the new one. I was able to setup WINS and
DHCP too. I did the printers as well by getting the drivers over the
network from the current system. I was even able to rename the old PDC
and the new server to the PDC's old name! I was able to reboot the
systems and log back onto them when they came up. I still have to do
some work on folder permissions. I opted to redo them rather than use
the resource kit tools to move them because it's a mess on the old
server. The new server is working now though. I logged into the Citrix
server as a regular user and all the shares and file were there as if
nothing had happened.

I will still have to go in to work to promote the new server to PDC. The
system warned me that I would lose my connection before that procedure
completed. I have to be there to setup the anti-virus stuff too because
the anti-virus server is our WEB server too. I don't let it do the
Netmeeting sharing.

Thank goodness for the remote software! I was able to hang out at home
with my girlfriend and watch TV while the turkey cooked instead of the
server room at work. I highly recommend the Citrix Metaframe software.
We just have the workgroup version that is limited to 5 concurrent
users. It's just $2000. If that's too much you can do the same thing
with the free Terminal Server in Windows 2000 Server. About all you lose
is the ability to print to your local printers and copy files to your
local drives.

If you do setup a system to do this make sure it's secure. Require 128
bit encryption to login AND use the server. By default encryption is
only needed to login. Require strong passwords and enable auditing of
all access. Enable account lockout after an invalid password. Make sure
you limit the users that can login remotely. By default everyone is
granted access. Require security on all Netmeeting connections and don't
enable remote sharing on any system with direct Internet access. Oh and
make sure you have installed ALL service packs and security patches.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Chris

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts on what I might be
overlooking in the following migration plan.
While everyone else at the company is home enjoying the long weekend,
I'll be in the office replacing our ready-to-die server (6 year old
Pentium Pro acting as the all in one server; PDC, Vantage, file &
print, and mail{Microsoft Mail, not Exchange}).
So far I've set up the new server as a BDC (NT4 SP6a) running WINS as
push/pull with the PDC. DHCP is installed, but no scope activated
yet. Vantage is installed but not active.
Migration plan is: Backup user files to tape. Force WINS replication
to get everything current. Export DHCP scope to new server. Backup
Vantage DB and move copy to new server. Promote BDC to PDC then take
old server offline. Change name & IP of new server to match that of
the old server. Restore Vantage DB. Install network printers. Copy
user files from tape backup. Setup mail postoffice files. Wait for
the phone to start ringing.
T.I.A., and have a great holiday.
